Megan is a Biology Major who joined the water lab in November 2015. She recently was awarded a prestigious the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Undergraduate Scholarship which will allow her to perform research during a 10 week summer internship for the NIH, followed by full time employment as a paid research employee for the National Institutes of Health following her baccalaureate. Her long-term goal is to attend graduate school for pediatric cancer research. Megan also enjoys Hiking, Kayaking/Canoeing, Playing old-school video games (NES, SNES, Genesis), and relaxing with her pets at home.
Arianna is a sophomore majoring in Chemistry with a focus in Chemical Physics. Her long-term career goals include working towards finding alternative, environmentally clean forms of energy production. Arianna joined the team in the Fall 2016 and will become the UNG Water Lab manager in the Spring of 2017. She is also the organizer of the UNG Community Garden Club.
Justin Ellis, Ph.D. Odum School of Ecology, University of Georgia
Dr. Ellis joined UNG’s Biology Faculty in the Spring of 2015 and became the Environmental Leadership Center’s Director in the Fall of 2016. His research interests are in the ecological restoration of degraded landscapes using soil organic matter amendments, agroecology, and campus sustainability innovations. Before joining the ELC he served as Executive Director of the Soque River Watershed Association from 2004 until 2015 and founded the Georgia Mountains Farmers Network and the Northeast Georgia Locally Grown farmers market (organizations dedicated to sustainable local foods and farmers). He’s proud to be the faculty advisor to the UNG Community Garden Club and a co-leader for a Study Abroad in Taiwan focused on the Environmental Sciences and Ecology of this tropical island.
Ashley is currently pursuing a dual degree of Chemistry and Engineering. Her long-term goals include: flavor engineering distilled spirits, green chemistry, and expanding recycling. She joined the UNG Water Lab in September 2015 in order to increase aquatic chemistry knowledge and managerial skills. She became the UNG Water Lab manager in Spring of 2016. Water Lab fosters her interests in downstream communities and lab procedures. When she is not in the lab, she is spending time with family while hiking, surfing, and wakeboarding.
Ian is a senior biology major. He joined Water Lab in Spring 2016. His long-term goals include becoming a trauma surgeon, serving in the armed forces, and working at the Wounded Warrior hospital in Germany. Water Lab provides the opportunity for Ian to experience aquatic chemistry and apply his knowledge of ecology to the environment. His hobbies include scouting, white water kayaking, and ultimate Frisbee.
