Nursing received UNG’s Presidential Innovation Award and approximately $460,000 in mid-year funding to support the development of inter-professional education and the expansion of the Nursing program by creating a virtual hospital and simulation center.
Drs. Terrie Millard and Alison Alhadeff, both of the department of Physical Therapy, along with a group of colleagues and UNG students, have explored 3D printing solutions to be utilized during physical therapy. This research has been presented nationally, at the state and local levels. For the past three years, a CURCA grant followed by two UNG Presidential Innovation Awards have funded the team with over $12,000.
Dr. Carolynn DeSandre, of the Nursing department, has received SEED money to collaborate with the department of Physical Therapy to conduct research examining an intervention involving canine therapy for veterans suffering Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Dr. Sharon Chalmers, of the department of Nursing, is involved in a research consortium with Emory University in a funded project for Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) student training project. She is developing curriculum based evaluation modules to be included in the Nursing curriculum at UNG.
Dr. Andy Robinson, of the department of Physical Therapy, and Dean Conner-Kerr submitted a grant in collaboration with Winston Salem State University to examine differing pedagogical approaches in inter-professional simulation.
Kathryn Parrish, Nursing’s Director of Simulation, leads planning initiatives for the new virtual hospital; set to open on the Gainesville campus in fall 2015. Katie has also been accepted into the National League for Nursing’s Leadership Development Program for Simulation Educators and received UNG’s Presidential Innovation Award for her involvement in this field. Katie recently received the 1st place Excellence in Research Poster Presentation award at the 14th annual INACSL conference; in collaboration with Drs. Dumphy and DeSandre of Nursing.
