The Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation at the University of North Georgia offers a PE degree with an emphasis in Exercise Science.
The Exercise Science emphasis area within the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER) provides the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical competencies to prepare students to be effective and competitive in clinical, corporate, and fitness settings. The program is also designed to prepare students for professional organization certifications and post-graduate studies in exercise science or other health-related disciplines.
The curriculum within the program is designed around the behavioral objectives and standards established by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). The Exercise Science emphasis area provides educational experiences for students pursuing careers in clinical settings (e.g., cardiac rehabilitation, physical or occupational therapy), health promotion, corporate wellness, or strength and conditioning.
All students admitted will have an initial assessment addressing their competencies in the areas of knowledge, skills and dispositions as well as having a fitness assessment. Students gain practical experience through an internship in an area of career interest during the culmination of the formal education. The internship program is designed to provide quality educational opportunities along with quality adult supervision to assist the student in gaining valuable experience in the profession.
Applications for Fall 2016 admittance into the Physical Education (Exercise Science) program will only be accepted once per year (December 1 - 15, 2015). The principal goal of the Exercise Science internship experience is to position a student in a quality environment that fosters learning, promotes professional growth, and gives them valuable work experience. This single course could be the most critical of all the Exercise Science courses. The student is now expected to work in a professional manner utilizing the knowledge and skills acquired during their classroom experiences. Some of the benefits associated with a clinical internship are:
- Gain practical experience in your chosen field.
- Improve personal and professional skills.
- Obtain additional references and contacts (e.g., networking).
- Enhance your opportunity with a company in obtaining employment.
- Work directly under an established individual in a position of leadership.
- Determine if your area of interest is a viable career option prior to making a long-term commitment.
- Admission to the Exercise Science emphasis area and meeting of retention standards are mandatory.
- A minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 is required.
- Completion of all Physical Education (Exercise Science) course requirements with at least a grade of "C" in all major courses.
- Attend a mandatory orientation meeting to receive a packet of materials about the policies and procedures in securing an approved internship site. Interns cannot be employed and/or a present member of the potential internship site.
- Complete a minimum of 360 active hours for 12 semester hours of college credit.
- Receive two formal evaluations of your performance from your site supervisor(s).
- Prepare and submit a series of weekly reports and forms for evaluation.
- Develop at least one special project during your internship experience (e.g., research paper, etc.).
- Prepare an internship notebook(s) consisting of an organized compilation of your personal work and responsibilities, worksite policies and procedures, handouts, projects, conference notes, etc.
- Adhere to the administrative policies, standards, and practices of the company or agency.
- Conduct yourself in an exemplary manner as a representative for UNG and HPER department.
- Have an active UNG e-mail account for official communications during the internship period.
- Hold a current CPR & Basic First Aid Certification by the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association as well as secure student professional liability insurance.
- Complete a background check through CertifiedBackground.com (www.CertifiedBackground.com with package code NB13)
- Other potential site requirements may include a physical examination, appropriate immunizations, drug screening, and a more extensive criminal background check.

The Exercise Science emphasis area is not an open option for a degree (i.e., acceptance by UNG as well as program application and approved admission are both required). Students wishing to enter the program must submit a complete application packet for admission to the UNG College of Education.
Applications for Fall 2016 admittance will only be accepted December 1 – 15, 2015. (No early or late applications will be accepted).
After the current Fall Semester review, the student’s overall GPA must be 2.75 or higher. If the overall GPA is 2.65-2.74 at the end of the Fall Semester review, it is the student's responsibility to submit a letter of explanation outlining the reason(s) for the deficiency. This letter must be received by the Admissions Coordinator for the College of Education no later than January 10. Any applications with an overall GPA below a 2.65 at the end of the Fall Semester review will not be considered.
All admission criteria, requirements, forms, and pertinent information are outlined below.
All students entering into the Exercise Science emphasis area must be accepted by UNG as well as the College of Education before beginning any professionally-based coursework. A completed application must be submitted typically during the sophomore year and approved prior to admission to the Exercise Science emphasis area. Also, an official copy of your current college transcript, your resume, and a letter of intent must be included with the application. An unofficial or "student" transcript copy is sufficient. Admission is required prior to enrollment in the following upper division classes: PHED 3350, 3380, 3380L, 4420, 4430, 4430L, 4470, 4480, and 4490.

Once a year in December, complete applications will be accepted for the following Fall Semester admittance. Candidates whose applications have met all admissions requirements will be contacted in the Spring Semester to schedule an interview with the Exercise Science Admissions Committee. After all interviews are completed, the Admissions Committee will select approximately 30 qualified students for admittance into the program. All applicants will receive a letter indicating their status, whether it be accepted, provisionally accepted, or denied. Qualified students not selected for admittance will be ranked and placed on a waiting list. Provisionally accepted students that fail to meet the qualifications will have their acceptance letter withdrawn and the first qualified applicant on the waiting list will be considered for admittance.
To be eligible for admission to the Exercise Science emphasis area within the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, a student must be accepted as a student by the University ofNorth Georgia and meet the following minimum requirements:
- complete 40 semester hours of earned credit and have an overall grade point average of 2.75 or higher by the end of the Spring Semester;
- complete all courses in Area A (Essential Skills) classes, BIOL 2120K, and BIOL 2130K with a grade of "C" or better. All prerequisite courses must be successfully completed no later thanSpring Semester;
- complete an application for admission to the Exercise Science emphasis area including an up-to-date unofficial copy of your complete college transcript, a letter of intent, and a personal resume;
- complete an interview with the Exercise Science Admissions Committee.
Retention In Exercise Science Emphasis Area
One important aspect of the Exercise Science emphasis area is the constant vigilance exercised by the faculty involved to ensure that standards of quality are maintained. The following standards must be maintained for continued retention in the emphasis area:
- compliance with rules and regulations prescribed for all students at North Georgia;
- adherence to the Code of Ethics of the Professional Practices Commission;
- completion of all courses in the academic major with an academic grade of "C" or better;
- demonstration of competence in the use of oral and written language; and
- maintenance of an overall grade point average of 2.75 as required for emphasis area admission.
Probation And Suspension
Students may be placed on probation and/or suspension if they fail to comply with the standards for retention in the Exercise Science emphasis area. Two consecutive semesters or sessions on probation will result in suspension from the Exercise Science emphasis area. In addition, a student will not be allowed to register for PHED 4490 (Internship: Exercise Science) until the standards for retention in the Exercise Science emphasis area are met. Due to the sensitive nature of working with both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals in various fitness settings (i.e., clinical, corporate, commercial, and community), this policy will be strictly enforced.
Students denied admission to or continuance in the Exercise Science emphasis area may appeal the decision. Appeals must be made in writing to the Dean of the College of Education and should clearly state why an exception should be made. A student must have a minimum overall grade point average of 2.75 to be considered for admission. The College of Education's Student Admissions and Recognition Committee will review the student’s appeal. An adverse decision by the Dean may be appealed in writing to the Associate Provost for Academic Administration, whose decision shall be final.

Some of these professions require additional education and/or certifications. Students may be required to take prerequisite courses or to secure a Masters or Doctorate degree in a specific discipline.
