Historical note

Andrew W. Cain was born in the Porter Springs District of Lumpkin County on August 30, 1874 to Jacob and Rebecca Turner Cain. After attending local schools, Cain matriculated to North Georgia College where he graduated with honors in 1898. Upon graduation, Cain taught in Georgia for two years before moving to Texas to teach. Cain went on to serve as a principal in Grapeland, Texas where he served for five years. During his time in Grapeland he met and married Nancy Woodard.

In 1907, the Cain's moved to the Philippines to answer the call for teachers. While in the Philippines he earned a Masters of Art from the University of Philippines. Cain and his wife returned to the US in 1919. He took several graduate courses from various universities including the University of Georgia and Columbia University. In 1920, Cain took a history professorship at North Georgia College and moved his family back to Dahlonega. While teaching at North Georgia College, Cain wrote several books including History of Spanish Normal School, Methods for Young Teachers, Philippine Government, and The History of Lumpkin County.

Cain had two children, Agnes who died at birth and Andrew W. Cain, Jr. Cain was also a 50 year member of Blue Mountain Lodge number 38. On November 8, 1953, Cain passed at the age of 79 at his home in Dahlonega.

Scope and contents

This small collection contains several chapters of Cain's History of Lumpkin County. The chapters include the latter half of the book (chapters 8-12). Of note are copies of photographs and cuts used in the published edition of the book.


The collection is arranged by chapter number.
