You can be a full-time student at the University of North Georgia, participate in the Corps of Cadets, take Army ROTC courses, and be a soldier in the Georgia Army National Guard all at the same time! If you want to commission as an Army officer when you graduate from UNG, you can compete for a "Simultaneous Membership Program" (SMP) slot as early as the beginning of your sophomore year of college. To get a SMP slot, you must be academically successful, exhibit good leaderships skills, and be selected by the Professor of Military Science. Most of our Guard soldiers get SMP slots, however, there are no guarantees. Those who are unable to get SMP slots are subject to deployment. Those in the SMP program are not deployable.

Why the Georgia Army National Guard?
The history of the National Guard goes back more than 360 years - before there was a "United States of America." In the face of danger, the farmers, doctors, and blacksmiths of the Massachusetts Bay Colony banded together to protect their families and property. The concept of the citizen-soldier was born. Ever since, citizen-soldiers have helped write the history of America.
Today, more than 350,000 men and women continue the tradition of the citizen-soldier as members of the Army National Guard. Peace... Disaster... Conflict... the Georgia National Guard is there. No matter the situation, you can always count on the Guard to be there for the citizens of the state and nation. Proud of their dual mission, the guard serves the Governor during peace, disaster, and local civil unrest; while in time of conflict, the Guard serves the President.
Get paid monthly for one weekend of training and two weeks of annual training in the summer.
