Lee Water's Memorial Scholarship Program

Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA) is committed to educating the University of North Georgia (UNG) community about the history and cultural of African American people. In addition, MSA seeks to develop minority leaders to serve the local community and beyond.

MSA prepares students for leadership and service by planning, developing, and implementing programs that:

  • develop oral and written communication skills, creative and critical thinking and intercultural competence;
  • promote an understanding and appreciation of various cultures;
  • develop specific knowledge and skills needed for the pursuit of professional careers and/or graduate study; and
  • help develop character by encouraging self-confidence, inclusivity, ethical behavior, academic excellence and a commitment to social justice.

To present African American Male students at UNG with opportunities for leadership development, peer interaction, and personal and professional development.

Learning Outcomes

  • Develop an understanding of themselves as future leaders in their communities.
  • Communicate with people who are from diverse backgrounds.
  • Develop leadership skills to assist in future academic and professional endeavors.

Student Incentives

  • Students who are chosen to participate in the program will be given a scholarship in the amount of $1,000.00 for the academic year ($500 per semester).

Participation Requirements

Students are chosen to participate in the program based on the following criteria. Students must:

  • Be an African American Male enrolled full time at UNG - Gainesville. 
  • Be A U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen.
  • Not have UNG student policy violations on record (academic or behavioral).
  • Be eligible for federal financial aid (must have completed 2014-2015 FAFSA).
  • Have a minimum 2.5 overall grade point average or above.
  • Must have 30 successfully completed credit hrs 

Student Commitments

Students who would like to participate in the program must be able to complete the following:

  • Become a Black Student Union (BSU) and NorthStar Student Association (AAMI) student officer.
  • Attend 15 Black Student Union (BSU) and NorthStar Student Association (AAMI) events for the awarding academic year.
  • Attend the Student Leadership conference in the fall.
  • Complete 2 community service projects within the academic year - one per semester. 
  • Maintain a minimum overall grade point average of 2.5.
  • Have successfully completed 30 credit hrs or more.
