Inspired by Sir Ian McKellan’s “Acting Shakespeare,” James DeVita presents his own life as a longshoreman turned critically-acclaimed Shakespearean actor in the one-man show “In Acting Shakespeare,” presented by the Gainesville Theatre Alliance beginning Feb. 22.
DeVita went straight to the docks out of high school. His life consisted of loading and unloading boats until he saw a live Shakespearean play—an event that made him realize acting was what he truly wanted to do. After working hard to be accepted into a community college dramatic arts program, losing his New Jersey accent, and immersing himself in Shakespeare’s words, DeVita joined the Professional Theatre Training program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
DeVita is now an actor, playwright, and author. His most remarkable Shakespearean roles include Iago, Macbeth, Hamlet, Romeo, Benedick, Richard II, and Richard III. He has received the Denver Critics Circle Award for Best Season as an Actor. An accomplished playwright, he is the resident playwright for The First State Children’s Theatre in Milwaukee where he has written or adapted more than 19 plays. He has also published two novels with HarperCollins publishing—“Blue” and “The Silenced.”
DeVita will be performing “In Acting Shakespeare” in the Buford Community Center’s Sylvia Beard Theatre, located at 2200 Buford Highway, Buford, Ga. Shows begin at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 22, 23, and 24.
