Even with many theatre majors off doing summer stock around the country, the Gainesville Theatre Alliance (GTA) has assembled a talented cast of alumni and professionals for a free staged reading of Neil Simon's romantic comedy "Barefoot in the Park."
The reading is set for 7:30 p.m., Thursday, July 18 in downtown Gainesville, Ga.
Neil Simon's classic romantic comedy follows the lives of newlyweds Paul Bratter, who is straight arrow, and Corie, his new wife and an effervescent free spirit who won't let anything disturb her romantic bliss. As the ecstasy of the honeymoon gives way to the reality of setting up housekeeping in a fifth-story Greenwich Village walk-up, the harmony of marriage turns to comical discord. "Barefoot in the Park" is rated G, and runs 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Simon's play premiered on Broadway in 1963, starring Robert Redford, and was made into a film in 1967 starring Redford and Jane Fonda.
Patrons are invited to bring lawn chairs and a picnic for the reading in Gainesville's Roosevelt Square, which is just off the Gainesville Square between the Brenau Downtown Center, formerly the Georgia Mountain Center, at 301 Main Street SW in Gainesville, and the Hall County Courthouse. Free parking is available on the square and in the parking garage that can be accessed from Main Street.
GTA is a nationally-acclaimed collaboration of the University of North Georgia, Brenau University, theatre professionals and the northeast Georgia community. Formed in 1979, GTA has won national and state awards for excellence and served a record audience of more than 25,000 patrons last season. The 2013-14 GTA season begins in August and tickets are now on sale.
Approximately 80 people attended last month's staged reading of the original play "The Bra and Panty Club."
