The University of North Georgia (UNG) welcomed some 75 staff members from across the state Oct. 2-3 for the annual University System of Georgia (USG) Staff Council Conference.
The two-day event was held on UNG's Gainesville Campus and featured guest speakers Christy Wright, a Dave Ramsey speaker and personal life coach who has spoken to Fortune 500 companies, military bases and universities, and Harris Blackwood from the Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety. Several UNG faculty members also led breakout sessions related to the conference theme "Personal Growth and Leadership."
Geraldine Winns of Albany State University and chairwoman of the USG Staff Council addressed the group at the beginning of the conference.
"Whatever you need, that's what we're here for. It's not about me, it's all about you," Winns said. "Staff makes it happen, from the campus grounds that are kept, to the classrooms and the dorms that are swept. We are the glue, the cement that holds together this university system."
Created in 1994, the USG Staff Council is made up of members of councils from schools throughout the USG and represents all staff members. The statewide meeting is held each October and is open to all staff throughout the system.
The UNG Staff Council, formed in July by consolidating existing staff councils from Gainesville State College and North Georgia College & State University, hosted the event. Staff Council President Tim Aldridge, plant operations supervisor for the Oconee Campus, called the conference a success.

"Some of the feedback we received from conference participants included 'best conference ever' and 'fabulous.' One participant felt we had 'raised the bar' for the annual conference," Aldridge said. "I want to thank facilities and operations for having the campus looking great, all set-ups in place and running the shuttle; IT for making sure our audio-visual worked; and the UNG Staff Council for all the hard work it took to plan this conference."
Aldridge also thanked the conference speakers, which included welcoming remarks from UNG President Bonita Jacobs and Senior Vice President for University Affairs Al Panu; guest speakers Wright and Blackwood; and break-out sessions from faculty members Dr. Allison Joy Bailey, Chandler Brown, the Rev. Frank Colladay, Dr. Joy Evans, and Dr. Bryson Payne.
The conference also featured a business meeting of the USG Staff Council, including an update on benefits from Marion L. Fedrick, USG's vice chancellor for human resources.
Next year's annual conference is slated for October at Albany State University.
