Concert pianist Joe Chapman will perform time-honored favorites celebrating the life and music of George Gershwin at the Merritt E. Hoag Student Center on March 28 at 7 p.m., one of many musical performances coming up at the University of North Georgia this spring.

The Department of Music at the University of North Georgia (UNG) is hosting several free events this spring, including vocal and instrumental ensembles performed on UNG campuses and around the region.

UNG students will perform an evening of musical theater selections from shows such as "Wicked," "Les Misérables," and "Into the Woods" on April 10-11 at the Gloria Shott Performance Hall on UNG's Dahlonega Campus. Lee Barrow, music professor at UNG, called the students who will be performing "a talented bunch."

"At times you'll be rolling in the aisles and at others you'll be deeply moved. I have been thoroughly impressed by what they have accomplished this semester," Barrow said.

The show will include a one-act, comic opera spoof, "The Stoned Guest," by musical parody artist P.D.Q. Bach. Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on April 10 and 2 p.m. on April 11.

Andy David, head of the music department, and his David Brothers Jazz Trio will perform in concert beginning at 8 p.m. March 24 in the Gloria Shott Performance Hall. The concert is the main event for the release of the trio's new album, which was recorded in the performance hall with the assistance of a Presidential Scholar Award that the group received in April 2014.

Taking a short break from their competition circuit with Winter Guard International, the Golden Eagle Band will perform a home show on March 27 beginning at 8 p.m. The performance will be held in Memorial Hall Gym on the Dahlonega Campus. The band's 2015 program, titled "Black and Gold," celebrates the band's colors and the colors of the U.S. Army. In three distinct parts, the program explores the colors separately and together with wide-ranging musical selections. To

From "I Got Rhythm" to "Rhapsody in Blue," concert pianist Joe Chapman will perform time-honored favorites celebrating the life and music of George Gershwin at the Merritt E. Hoag Student Center on March 28 at 7 p.m. This is the final concert of a seven-day, eight-concert tour throughout Georgia.

Other upcoming performances include:

  • The Symphonic Band will perform at 8 p.m. on April 2 in the Merritt E. Hoag Auditorium on the Dahlonega Campus.
  • The UNG Chorale and Men's Ensemble will present their annual spring concert at 7:30 p.m. on April 9 at the First Baptist Church of Gainesville Chapel.
