In April, the Allison Clapp Memorial Fun Run/Walk 5K welcomed more than 150 participants and their families and friends to the University of North Georgia (UNG), and the proceeds of $7,000 were recently presented to UNG's Department of Nursing to establish the Allison Clapp Memorial Scholarship.
Clapp, who passed away in 2014, was an assistant professor of nursing and a 1995 alumna. She often worked in the Dahlonega Campus Student Health Clinic and the Appalachian Nurse Practitioner Clinic, and served as president-elect for Tau Psi, UNG's chapter of nursing honor society Sigma Theta Tau, in 2013.
"My wife was passionate about many things, but being a nursing professor was one of the most important things in her life," said Jonathan Clapp, Allison Clapp's husband. "She received several scholarships during her time as a student here, and they enabled her to pursue her dream. It is incredible to see a scholarship in her name and to know that it will give the same opportunity to other inspired nursing students."
Details for how the scholarships will be awarded are not yet final, though the scholarships will be based on both academic performance and financial need.
The second annual Allison Clapp Memorial Fun Run/Walk 5K will begin at 9 a.m. on March 26, 2016 on UNG's Dahlonega Campus. Hosted by Tau Psi, the 5K will follow a scenic route through the Dahlonega Campus and downtown Dahlonega. Proceeds will again benefit the Allison Clapp Memorial Scholarship.
"Of the 168 participants in the 1st Annual Allison Clapp Memorial 5K, more than 50 were faculty and students of the UNG Nursing Department, and in addition to honoring a beloved nursing faculty member, this event served as an outreach to the community," said Heather Harris, lecturer of nursing and organizer of the Clapp 5K. "Allison was a lifelong learner. She earned her Associate of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing degrees all at UNG. As a nursing professor, she inspired students to excel in the profession she loved. She would be thrilled that her legacy will live on through a scholarship that benefits nursing students."
Registration for the race is $30 until Feb. 1, then $35 until March 11, then $40 up to and on race day. There is also a $3.95 sign-up fee, and refreshments will be available throughout and after the race. Race day registration starts at 7:30 a.m. The event runs from 9 a.m. to noon, and an awards ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. T-shirts are guaranteed with paid registration to all participants who register by March 10. Online registration closes at noon on March 25. The Allison Clapp Memorial Fun Run/Walk 5K will be a rain or shine event.
