The Gainesville Theatre Alliance (GTA) will present the Broadway musical "Mary Poppins" Nov. 3 at Brenau University's Hosch Theatre in Gainesville.
GTA is a nationally acclaimed collaboration of the University of North Georgia (UNG), Brenau, theater professionals, and the north Georgia community.
The play, based on P.L. Travers' celebrated book series and inspired by the 1964 film, opens with nannies storming in and out of the residence at Number 17 Cherry Tree Lane as the mischievous and headstrong children of George and Winifred Banks keep scaring them away. However, things change when Mary Poppins suddenly arrives, by way of flying umbrella, and magically tends to the Banks' family issues to create perfect harmony.
This musical production is directed by Jim Hammond, who is the artistic and managing director for GTA, as well as UNG's theater department chair. Repeat patrons will recognize Hammond's style of direction, as he has directed more than 40 plays and musicals for GTA since 1991, including recent adaptations of "Chicago," "The Producers" and "Singin' in the Rain."
In addition to all the in-house talent of GTA professionals and students, "Mary Poppins" will also feature scenic designer and UNG professor Larry Cook, whose recent credits include designing the innovative sets for GTA's "Sense and Sensibility." Also contributing will be sound designer Stuart Beaman, who has worked on more than 40 GTA productions, including "The Great Gatsby."
Ticket prices for the production are $22-$26 for adults, $20-$24 for seniors (65 and up), and $14-$16 for students, depending on seat location.
