Earlier this month, the Georgia Department of Labor announced the state's jobless rate was 5.4 percent in January, down one-tenth of a point from the previous month and almost a full point lower than January 2015.
Seizing on the state's positive employment forecast, the Office of Career Services at the University of North Georgia (UNG) will host Spring Career Fairs on the Dahlonega, Gainesville and Oconee Campuses. The fairs will offer new or soon-to-be graduates, as well as alumni, the opportunity to meet face-to-face with more than 90 employers interested in hiring for internships, part-time, seasonal and full-time positions.
"Each of the companies in attendance want UNG students in their programs or companies either now or in the future," said Katie Hemphill, career specialist at UNG.
Hemphill's advice to attendees is to be open-minded in considering all employment options, as the lesser-known companies can have opportunities that equate or exceed those offered by better-known companies.
She also recommends that students and alumni who plan on attending do a bit of research beforehand to know about the organizations and the opportunities within them. The College Central Network site contains background information on the 100 organizations that will be participating in the career fair, including the Central Intelligence Agency, Atlanta Police Department. Ga Department of Audits and Accounts, Gainesville City Schools, Verizon and RaceTrac.
"Georgia employers continue to add jobs at a stronger pace than the national over-the-year job growth rate and it is great that UNG can provide such a wonderful opportunity for the next generation of professionals to meet with a wide variety of these employers," said Janet Marling, vice president of student affairs. "The career fair is always a tremendous success in being mutually beneficial to not only our students and alumni, but the employers as well."
On the Gainesville Campus the career fair will be held in the Robinson Ballroom on March 22 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
On the Dahlonega Campus the career fair will be held in the Student Recreation Center on March 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
On the Oconee Campus the career fair will be held in the Wellness and Activities Hall on April 13 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Professional attire is required, and resumes are strongly encouraged. The event is open to current UNG students and alumni only.
