Students, community welcome to attend job fair

(March 19, 2013) Members of the community are welcome to join University of North Georgia students for a job fair scheduled for March 26 on the university's Gainesville campus.

Career Services is sponsoring the job fair, set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Center's cafeteria area. Some two dozen potential employers will be on site, including retailers, government agencies and non-profits, to recruit for part-time, full-time and seasonal positions.

"The job fair is a great opportunity to see who is hiring and the types of positions that are available," said Dr. Edward Wai-Ming Lai, assistant director of Career Services. "The job fair helps job seekers get their foot in the door of the career they want and talking with recruiters will help get their names and résumés out there. Networking is the best way to find a job."

Those attending the job fair should bring plenty of copies of résumés, and should dress professionally and be prepared to discuss skills and career goals.

Lai said the job fair also makes good practice for students who aren't currently in the job market.

"Even for students who are not currently seeking employment, the job fair provides great experience and preparation for future job-seeking endeavors," he said.

The employers scheduled to appear include: Abercrombie and Fitch; American Teleservices; Avita Community Partners; Axiom Staffing; Best Buy; Epting Events; Gainesville Police Department; Georgia Aquarium; Georgia Department of Labor; Georgia Mountains YMCA; Goodwill of North GA; Hall County Sheriff’s Office; HTI Employment Solutions; Keller Williams Realty; Lake Lanier Islands Resort; Lumite Inc.; McDonald’s of Northeast Georgia Inc.; Modern Woodmen of America; Old Navy; RaceTrac Petroleum Inc.; Sears; Sherwin Williams; Tribe Transportation; and Target.

UNG students seeking career assistance can visit their campus's Career Services office or make an appointment to see a counselor. In addition to maintaining job listings and hosting career fairs, Career Services can help students and alumni with the career development process, including self-assessment, career exploration, and preparation and decision-making.
