Interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math?  Come to the Summer Accel STEM Institute

Interested in Arabic, Chinese, Korean, or Russian?  Come to the Summer Accel Language Institute.

These highly competitive and low cost summer institutes are for Georgia high school students who will be juniors or seniors in Fall 2015.  Students reside in the most modern and beautiful residence hall on the Dahlonega campus for the duration of the programs, and will earn both college and high school academic credit. The STEM Institute is for students who aspire to careers in STEM fields after completing their college education. The Language Institute is for students interested in careers where understanding a strategic language and culture is critical:  federal government agencies such as the FBI, CIA, Department of State; non-governmental agencies; international business, and much more. 

Dates:  June 21 through July 30, 2015
Location:  University of North Georgia's Dahlonega Campus
Capacity:  24 students for STEM Institute and 54 students for Language Institutes
Please Note:  We may cancel one or more of the institutes, depending on interest. Should we cancel, we will refund your application fee.

Admission Criteria:

  • Legal Georgia resident
  • Entering high school junior or senior in Fall 2014 (includes home school students)
  • 3.25 minimum cumulative GPA in required high school curriculum course work
  • SAT minimum 970 combined critical reading and math, with minimum 480 critical reading and minimum 440 math for Language Institute or 500 math for STEM Institute - or - ACT minimum 21 composite with minimum 20 English and minimum 18 math for Language Institute or 19 math for STEM Institute
  • Language Institute is not open to native speakers of their desired language

Your Cost:

  • Accel will pay your tuition - you save $1,360 for Language Institute and $1,190 for STEM Institute
  • UNG will not charge you mandatory fees - you save another $860
  • You pay:
    • $950 for room ($600) and meals ($350) for 40 days
    • $410 STEM Institute books and lab fee (approximate)
    • $200 Language Institute books (approximate)
    • $30 application fee
    • $250 dorm deposit which will be refunded to you after July 31
  • Note that there is no other federal or state financial aid available.  Please do not submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

 

Summer Accel STEM Institute Courses

NOTE:  The STEM Institute has been canceled due to insufficient interest.

You will take math, biology, and a biology lab for a total of seven college credits. The courses will be taught concurrently, so you will take math and biology every day. 

Course descriptions:Two students working on a dissection project

  • Math 1113.  Pre-calculus.  Three academic credits.  A course providing an intensive study on transcendental functions and their applications, which are fundamental to the study of calculus, physics, and related technical subjects. Emphasis is placed on trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions, trigonometric identities and equations, right and oblique triangles, and the trigonometric form of complex numbers. Additional topics include algebraic calculus expressions, system of equations, conic sections, and a review of exponential and logarithmic functions. 
  • Biology 1107.  Principles of Biology I.  Three academic credits.  A course for future STEM majors that includes biological chemistry, cell structure and function, bioenergetics, inheritance, gene expression, regulation and technology, population genetics and evolution.
  • Biology 1107 Lab.  One academic credit.  A course with activities designed to develop your powers of observation, skills in biological techniques, experimentation, data analysis, and critical thinking that are necessary for advanced biology courses.

Language ClassSummer Accel Language Institute Courses

Arabic/Chinese/Korean/Russian 1001 and 1002.  Four academic credits each.  These courses are the first of two elementary language courses designed to develop your skills in speaking, listening comprehension, reading, and writing as well as familiarize you with aspects of the target culture. These courses combine in-class lecture with instructional delivery through lab assignments and online course work.

  • April 1 :  Preferred application deadline - these applicants will be considered first
  • April 5 :  UNG admissions office will mail decision letters to students who meet the preferred deadline
  • May 1 :  Final application deadline
  • May 1 :  Confirmation deadline for preferred applicants
  • May 5 :  UNG admissions office will mail decision letters to students who meet the May 1st deadline
  • May 15 :  Confirmation deadline for May 1st applicants

How to Apply

    • Step 1:  Consult with your high school guidance counselor to ensure this program and course work is appropriate for you.
    • Step 2:  Complete our interest form.
  • Step 3:  Complete either the UNG online or paper application* for admission. Be sure to follow the instructions on the UNG Accel web page.
  • Step 4:  Complete the Accel paper application* located on the GACollege411. Please mail the Accel paper application to:
