Scholarships and Awards
Visual Arts offers two categories of merit-based scholarships for Studio Art, Art Marketing, and Art Education degree majors. Scholarships are awarded based on artistic and academic achievement, as well as the student’s involvement in the Visual Arts, the university, and the community. To be eligible, students must have a minimum of 60 credit hours, and a 3.0 or better grade point average (GPA). Application sheets are posted at the beginning of Spring semester.
The art faculty at our Dahlonega Campus award several scholarships based on academic excellence and artistic achievement. The scholarships are as follows:
Gloria Shott Fine Arts Scholarship Up to 3 one-year awards.
Bob Owens Art Scholarship A one-year award.
Visual Arts Awards Visual Arts offers two merit-based awards to art students each Spring semester.
Hal B. Rhodes III Outstanding Artist of the Year Award Presented each year to the Senior who best exemplifies the campus leadership, departmental commitment, scholarly and artistic achievement, and professional dedication asked of Art Area majors. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.
Bob Owens Award Presented each year to the most outstanding student. This award, which includes a monetary prize, was established in 2007 by Gwen Owens.
Hal B. Rhodes III Juried Student Exhibition Prizes Several prizes are awarded each Spring to participants in the Hal B. Rhodes III Juried Student Exhibition. The recipients are honored at the reception, and a monetary award is granted to each.
Hal B. Rhodes III Art Student Exhibition Awards: Best In Show, First Prize, Second Prize, Third Prize, and Honorable Mention. Awards made by the guest juror to the top five works in the exhibition.
Visual Arts Department Head Award Award chosen by Pam Sachant, Head of Visual Arts.
President’s Choice Award Award chosen by Dr. Jacobs, President of UNG. The work chosen is displayed for one year in the president’s office in Price Memorial Hall, and then enters the university’s permanent collection.
Social Justice Award Award for the work demonstrating the greatest awareness of the need for tolerance, fairness, and equality in our global society.
The art faculty at our Gainesville and Oconee Campuses award several scholarships based on academic excellence and artistic achievement. The scholarships are as follows:
The Artistic Excellence Scholarship Awarded to 10 individuals who exhibit strong artistic growth and potential. Each scholarship is in the amount of $300.
The Outstanding Achievement in Art Scholarship Awarded to two students exhibiting outstanding artistic abilities and scholastic performance. This scholarship is in the amount of $500.
The Chestatee Review A non-monetary literary publication featuring selected writings and artwork of GSC students.
