Uploading a Profile Image

Overview

Profile images are displayed on a person's profile and on department listings. They do not display on the UNG directory listing.

When you upload a profile image, Cascade will make two additional images with their sizes appended to the filename. The correct size is selected based on where the image is displayed.

Requirements of a Profile Image

  • They need to be professional studio headshots.
  • Finished images should have the same ratio as a 125 x 168 image (width x height).

Image Filename and Type

It is recommended that you name your profile images as "firstname-lastname" or "lastname-firstname." Whichever you choose, be consistent.

Save your image as either of these two file types:

  • .png
  • .jpg (recommended)

No GIFs or TIFFs!

  • TIFFs are for print.
  • GIFs are for graphics or line art.

Instructions

Upload Location

  1. In the left panel, all profile images will be uploaded to the following folder:
         _uploads/images/profiles
  2. You do not need to select the "profiles" folder first as the upload will automatically select the "profiles" folder for you.

  2. In the left panel, you will see your original image along with 2 additional images.

  4. These images must publish overnight.

Note: The email address is what ties the image, profile, and department listing together so the image will display.

Image uploaded and multiple image sizes created
  • Access to either the training web site or as a web editor to your site.
  • Cascade: Basic I training.
  • Professional studio headshot in the correct width/height ratio.

Keep in Mind

  • Profile images must have the person's email address on all 3 images (original and copies) for it to display in a profile.
  • If you have a department listing that displays profile images, each person should also have a profile page in order for the image to show up in the department listing.

Naming Convention

  • Firstname-lastname or lastname-firstname.
  • No special characters, no spaces (use hyphens between words).
  • Cannot start with a number.

Character Limits

  • Image Filename: There are no character limits, but restrict it to their name only.

Definitions:

  • Profile Page:  (Same as faculty/staff bio page) A page within a department site that displays a person's directory information and possibly additional biographical information as it pertains to their position at the university.

The image can be larger than 125 x 168, but it must be of the same width-to-height ratio. When you upload the image into Cascade it will create 2 additional images that are 125 pixels wide and 63 pixels wide. To get the proper width or height, use the numbers below.

  • Width is known: Multiply width by 1.344 to get new height.
  • Height is known: Multiply height by .744 to get new width.

One simple method is to crop the width to what you want it to be, and size the image down to 125 pixels wide. Then you can crop the height to 168.

Note: If you have a photo taken in University Relations, we will usually crop and size the photo for you.

Finished Profile Image Size

  • Width: 125px
  • Height: 168px
