Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with Teacher Certification
The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with Teacher Certification is aligned to national standards established by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) along with state guidelines provided by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC). As recommended by these bodies, candidate teachers in the MAED program complete mathematics content coursework that is equivalent to a mathematics major along with an educational component sufficient to grant initial teacher certification upon graduation.
Students who elect this major must be admitted to the teacher certification program through the College of Education during Spring semester of their sophomore year.

Course Planning Guide
A course planning guide is provided below for a mathematics major who takes a statistics minor. Mathematics majors in their first two years should focus on completing the core curriculum, efficiently working through the Key Prerequisites for mathematics content (MATH 2460 and MATH 2800) and beginning 3000-level mathematics content courses. The degree map is a suggestion only. Please discuss your plan of study with your advisor to make sure that you meet all requirements.
Please note that a minor is required, but the content for the minor is left to the student's choice from current UNG minors. You should speak with an advisor in the content area of your chosen minor (at the latest) during your second year so that you can complete the prerequisites and coursework for that minor.
Freshman Year
Mathematics majors should complete Calculus II (MATH 2460) during the first year because it is a Key Prerequisite. If Calculus II has not been completed by spring semester of the first year, mathematics majors should consider taking it in the summer before the second year begins. Education Foundations courses (EDUC 2110, 2120 and 2130) should be completed by the end of Year 2.

Why this student is on track
Core Curriculum requirements have been met. Area A of the core is complete (MATH 1450, ENGL 1101 and 1102) as are Area D (MATH 2460 and Lab Sciences). A lab science sequence is required in Area D. Student has begun Education Foundations courses.
Sophomore Year
Mathematics majors should complete Intro to Proofs (MATH 2800) by end of the second year because it is a Key Prerequisite. If Proofs has not been completed by spring semester of the second year, mathematics majors should ensure that it is completed no later than fall semester of the third year. Otherwise, graduation may be delayed and student teaching experiences may be delayed. The student should apply to the College of Education during Spring of Year 2.

Areas A through D of the core curriculum are complete (except for foreign language). Key Prerequisites of MATH 2460 and 2800 enable student a wide choice of mathematics courses to choose from at the 3000- and 4000-level. Junior Year
By the end of the Junior year, students should have completed the entire core curriculum, have at least of half their minor courses complete and several of their 3000- and 4000-level mathematics content complete. The MAED 3000 block should be taken in Spring of Year 3.

Senior Year
In Year 4, the student must complete all required courses for the major and complete the educational component including the MAED 400 block (Fall only) and the Student Teaching Internship (Fall or Spring). Students may not attempt the student teaching internship unless they have completed all mathematics and education content. If needed, additional content courses may be taken in the Spring of Year 4 and the student teaching internship completed in the Fall of Year 5.
