ESL Tutoring Services

Located inside ACT 2 in the Academic IV building on the 2nd floor, instructor Gregor Mieder assists students whose first language is not English to improve their grammar, writing, and reading skills. When students come to the lab, tutors will answer questions concerning students' problem areas in English and will guide them in independently correcting recurring errors. Students can seek help for an array of projects such as academic essays (not just for English class), reading assignments, cover letters, and scholarship applications.

Hours of Operation

Writing Center hours: Monday –Thursday  8:00 a.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Friday  8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.  (1:00 p.m. in the summer) Schedules for individual tutors, including the ESL tutor, vary and are posted next to the door of the Writing Center.

Appointments are not required but are strongly recommended.

What Students Should Bring to a Tutoring Session:

  • a hardcopy of the project or essay
  • a pen or pencil
  • relevant materials such as the assignment guidelines, research materials, or the textbook
  • comments or directions from the instructor
  • specific questions or goals

What Students Should NOT Expect from a Tutoring Session:

  • to drop off assignments for proofreading. The student must be present.
  • to have the tutor make the corrections. The student will make the corrections.
  • to get an “A” on an assignment. The ESL Lab cannot promise an “A.”
  • to wait until the last minute to get help. Students should come in two or three or more days before the assignment is due so that they can thoughtfully revise the assignment.
