Areas of Concentration

Bachelor of Science in general studies students must choose three areas of concentration from among the nine listed below and pass at least five 3000- and/or 4000-level courses in each area of concentration (15 credit hours). Area F courses should satisfy pre-requisites for the area of concentration courses. NOTE: Not all campuses offer every upper-level class for each area of concentration.

  • Business – ACCT, BUSA, FINC, MGMT, MKTG (Bachelor of Science in general studies w/ a business concentration)
  • Fine and Performing Arts – ART, MDST, MUSC, THEA
    • (Area F) ART 1020, 1030, 2010, 2020, 2510, and 2520; MDST (Check individual courses for pre-requisites); MUSC 1001, 1002, 2001, 2002; THEA (Check individual courses for pre-requisites)
  • Health Sciences - HLTH
    • (Area F) Students should consult the pre-requisites for the individual upper-level HLTH courses they wish to take.
  • Humanities – ARAB, CHIN, COMM, ENGL, FREN, GRMN, HIST, JOUR, KREN, PHIL, RUSS, SPAN
    • (Area F) ARAB 2002; CHIN 2002; COMM 1100 (Check individual courses for pre-requisites); ENGL 2050 (B or higher), Area C ENGL, and 2230 (B or higher); FREN 2002; GRMN 2002; HIST 1112; JOUR (Check individual courses for pre-requisites); KREN 2002; PHIL 2200; RUSS 2002; SPAN 2002
  • Mathematics/Technology – CSCI, GISC, MATH

  • Mission Related – MILS, Leadership, International Affairs, Gender Studies, Appalachian Studies

  • Natural Sciences – BIOL, CHEM, ENGR, GEOG, PHYS
    • (Area F) BIOL 1108K (some also require CHEM 1212/1212L); CHEM 1212/1212L (Some also require MATH 2460 and PHYS 2212, so check individual courses for pre-requisites); ENGR (Check individual courses for pre-requisites); PHYS 2212/2212L (Some also require MATH 2460, so check individual courses for pre-requisites)
  • Pre-Professional Programs – ATEP/SPMD*, EDUC*, ISCI*, NURS*, PHED/KINS
    • (Area F) Most pre-professional focus group courses require students to be accepted to that specific program before being allowed to take 3000- and/or 4000-level courses; this requirement is noted with an asterisk (*). ATEP* 2335; EDUC* 2110, 2120, 2130; ISCI*; NURS* (Admission to BSN program).
  • Social Sciences – CRJU, GERO, HSDA, POLS, PSYC, SOCI
    • (Area F) CRJU 1100; HSDA (SOWK 2000; check individual courses for pre-requisites); POLS 1101; PSYC 1101; SOCI 1101
