Physical Education (M.A.T.)

Program Description

The Master of Arts in Teaching with a major in physical education is an advanced degree designed for students with an undergraduate degree in health and physical education or a related field.

This program provides an advanced degree opportunity for physical educators (and related fields) who hold a teaching certificate in physical education OR have a degree in Exercise Science, Athletic Training, and non-certification Physical Education.

The M.S. provides students with advanced experiences and study in several interrelated content areas within the physical education domain. The program further develops the abilities of students to conduct research and critically assess professional practices within educational and sport-related settings.

This program does not provide a certification upon its completion.

The M.S. degree in Kinesiology requires a professional core of 9 hours that includes a research class and a measurement/evaluation class, a science-based area of 6 hours, a social science-based area of 6 hours, and the opportunity for the student to select 6 hours from either category for electives. The final 3-hour required class involves the completion of a final action research project.

Once admitted, students must make a grade of “C” or above in each course.
