Become a part of UNG history by writing the university's alma mater

In the ongoing process of consolidation, the University of North Georgia invites students, faculty, staff, retirees, and alumni to help create a new alma mater for the university. Both Gainesville State College and North Georgia College & State University have had their own alma maters, developed by faculty members of the respective institutions. The alma mater is traditionally performed at university functions and special events to instill a sense of unity, pride and commitment.

The alma mater will be performed for the first time at the April 26 inauguration of UNG President Bonita C. Jacobs and lyrics will be included in the event program. The alma mater also will be performed shortly after the inauguration at the first UNG commencement exercises, set for May 4 and May 10-12.

For the new alma mater, individuals or groups are invited to submit lyrics to Andy David, chair of the Department of Music, who will lead a selection committee comprised of faculty and student representatives from each campus. Submissions should represent original work and reflect the identity, mission and educational experience of the University of North Georgia. Entries should be no more than 100 words. The creator of the winning entry will receive $500.  Once the winning entry has been selected, a composer will set the lyrics to music.

Lyrics should be submitted by 5 p.m. on Friday, April 5 to or by mail to Andy David, Department of Music, University of North Georgia, 82 College Circle, Dahlonega, GA 30597.

All submissions to the Alma Mater Lyrics Competition become the property of the University of North Georgia (UNG).
