Debate team hosts major tournament

On the weekend of March 8-9, the University of North Georgia debate team hosted the most prestigious High School Debate Tournament in the state, the Georgia Forensic Coaches Association’s high school debate and speech state tournament championship. 44 student-members of the UNG debate team volunteered to help direct the event, which accommodated 225 high school competitors, representing 35 schools, and 50 critics. Four of the nation’s top six policy debate teams competed in the event, with Grady High School taking the top overall award.

The event also included the GFCA Hall of Fame luncheon during which Jenny Heidt of Westminster Academy, Steve Stein of Chattahoochee High School, and Bill Swafford of Lee County High School were all inducted into the Hall of Fame. The UNG debate team also received a standing ovation at the ceremony for their outstanding work hosting and judging the tournament.
