GTA presents "Twelfth Night" in true Shakespearian style

Twelfth Night

In April, the Gainesville Theatre Alliance will present William Shakespeare's classic comedy, "Twelfth Night." The show will run April 9-13 and 16-20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Ed Cabell Theatre on the University of North Georgia's Gainesville campus; 2:30 p.m. matinees will be performed on April 14 and 20.

Following the tale of Viola, who disguises herself as a man after being shipwrecked, "Twelfth Night" portrays a hilarious love-triangle in typical Shakespearian fashion: Viola falls in love with her employer, Duke Orsino, but Orsino pursues Olivia, who is infatuated with the disguised Viola.

The play is directed by Elisa Carson, associate professor of voice and movement, who will present the play in "original practice" – imitative of the way it would have been performed in Shakespeare's day. Featured in the show is guest artist David DeVries as Malvolio.

There will be a free reception following the opening night performance on April 9 catered by Scott's Downtown of Gainesville.

Also in April, GTA Southern Stage, a collaboration between the city of Buford, the University of North Georgia and Brenau University, presents Alfred Hitchcock's "The 39 Steps" at Buford's Sylvia Beard Theatre.

"The 39 Steps" is a fast-paced mystery for anyone who loves the magic of theatre. This award-winning treat is packed with nonstop laughs, more than 150 characters played by a cast of four, an on-stage plane crash, handcuffs, missing fingers, and some good, old-fashioned romance.

The show runs April 5-14 and tickets are available through GTA.The Gainesville Theatre Alliance is a unique, nationally acclaimed collaboration between the University of North Georgia, Brenau University, theatre professionals, and the northeast Georgia community that offers students hands-on training working on professional theatre performances.
