Two members of the University of North Georgia’s library staff are being recognized by the Lumpkin County Historical Society for their work digitizing and publishing historical issues of The Mountain Signal and The Dahlonega Nugget from the 19th and 20th centuries. The staff members, Brandon Gipson and Cynthia Horne, will be honored at the society’s annual awards recognition program on April 11.
Gipson and Horne's project is particularly notable because it led to the discovery of a copy of the first edition of The Dahlonega Nugget. It was previously believed that there were no surviving copies of The Nugget’s inaugural issue, but during the project one was found among a collection of historic newspapers donated to UNG by a relative of Professor Andrew Cain.
