End of year events approaching

Holiday Events 2013
Faculty and staff enjoy the 13th Annual White Christmas Breakfast.

Several events marking the end of 2013, from finals week to commencements, are just around the corner at the University of North Georgia. Most offices and parts of each campus will close or reduce hours of operation during the Thanksgiving and winter breaks.

Students began Thanksgiving break on Nov. 25, and all offices will be closed Nov. 27-29. Students’ final week of classes for the fall semester is Dec. 2-6, with finals scheduled Dec. 9-13. Commencement ceremonies will be held on the Gainesville Campus on Dec. 14 at 10 a.m. and at 3 p.m. and on the Dahlonega Campus on Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Additional details and instructions for graduates are located at

On Dec. 4, the Staff Council on the Dahlonega Campus will hold its 15th Annual White Christmas Breakfast; this year's event will feature a nutcracker theme. The breakfast will be held from 7 to 8:30 a.m. in the dining hall banquet room, and breakfast will be free for any faculty and staff members who bring four canned goods or one unwrapped, new toy to the breakfast. All donations from these drives will benefit the Community Helping Place (CHP), a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting those in need in Lumpkin County. CHP provides resources such as a food pantry, free clinic, emergency financial assistance for rent or utilities, and counseling.

UNG dining services will be closed during fall and winter breaks. Food services on the Dahlonega Campus closed on Nov. 22, and will reopen on Dec. 2. Dining services will close Dec. 13 and reopen when classes resume on Jan. 6.

The UNG bookstores will operate normally with some exceptions during December, but will close at noon Nov. 27 for Thanksgiving and reopen Dec. 3. The Dahlonega Campus bookstore will be open Nov. 29 for a Black Friday sale. All UNG bookstores will be closed Dec. 21 through Jan. 1 for the holidays.

Library hours also will be affected by the holidays and finals week. To view library hours for each campus, please visit:

Several residence halls on the Dahlonega Campus will be closed for the holidays. Donovan Hall, Lewis Hall, Lewis Annex, Gaillard Hall, and Liberty Hall closed for Thanksgiving on Nov. 22, and will reopen on Dec. 1 at noon. These halls will also close for Christmas on Dec. 14 at 10 a.m., and will reopen Jan. 5 at noon. Owen Hall, North Georgia Suites and Patriot Hall will remain open during the breaks.
