The math club on the University of North Georgia's Gainesville Campus recently held the 20th annual Invitational Math Tournament. The tournament for second-semester calculus students was attended by some 160 students from 12 colleges and universities, including schools from locations as distant as Cape Fear, N.C., and Grenada, Miss.
Wake Technical Community College of Raleigh, N.C., placed first in the overall competition. Wake students Pren Shah and Diwash Thapa placed first and second respectively in the morning calculus competition.
The organizers of the tournament wish to thank numerous math faculty members from UNG's Gainesville and Oconee campuses that provided many of hard hours of work, including writing the problems, registering the students, and administering and grading the tests. They also wish to thank Gainesville Campus staff for the extra work to set up the venues, and Gainesville Food Service staff for providing barbecue.
The tournament was originally created by retired UNG faculty members Deborah Bolding and Christy Yeager.
