University of North Georgia (UNG) musical groups are hosting numerous performances throughout the fall semester to showcase their work. Vocal and instrumental ensembles will perform on UNG campuses and around the northeast Georgia community.
"This will be a very busy semester for all of our ensembles on both the Gainesville and Dahlonega campuses, especially in November," said Andy David, head of UNG's Department of Music.
Two UNG vocal groups have been asked to perform this fall at high-profile sporting events in Atlanta.
On Sept. 11, the Patriot Choir will sing the National Anthem prior to the PGA Tour Championship by Coca-Cola at the Eastlake Golf Course in Atlanta.
The UNG Men's Quartet, which was featured in WSB-TV's televised Independence Day special this summer, also will sing the National Anthem prior to a softball game between former Atlanta Braves baseball players and members of the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF) at the Gwinnett Braves Baseball Stadium in Lawrenceville. Bobby Cox, former Atlanta Braves manager, will coach the SOWF team. The event will take place Sunday, Oct. 26 at 2:30 p.m.
The university's symphonic and jazz bands have several performances this semester. The jazz band will be performing Oct. 10 and Nov. 20 at 8 p.m. in the Shott Auditorium of UNG's Dahlonega Campus, and Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Ed Cabell Theatre of UNG's Gainesville Campus. The symphonic band will be performing Oct. 2, Oct. 18, and Nov. 20 at 7:30 in the Ed Cabell Theatre on UNG's Gainesville Campus, and on Oct. 23 at 8 p.m. in Hoag Auditorium on UNG's Dahlonega Campus.
The university's chorus, UNG Singers, and the women's chorus, Le Belle Voci, will have two free fall concerts in November. The first will be held at the Dahlonega Baptist Church on Nov. 3 at 8 p.m. The second will be at the Dahlonega United Methodist Church on Nov. 4 at 8 p.m. Both groups will also host a collaborative concert with UNG Chorale in the Chapel at Gainesville First Baptist Church on Nov. 11 at 7:30 p.m.
The UNG Chorale and Men's Ensemble will hold the Annual Holiday Concert on Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Ed Cabell Theatre on UNG's Gainesville Campus, and on Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Briarwood Baptist Church in Watkinsville.
Next spring, UNG Singers and Le Belle Voci will tour Texas during spring break March 12-21 and then present homecoming concerts March 30 and 31 at area churches.
"The spring tour is an exciting event for the choirs," Dr. John Broman, UNG's director of choral activities. "Our university's choral ensembles have been touring during spring break in odd-numbered years since 1997."
The Golden Eagle Band has four performances planned for the fall. Their first performance is the Distinguished Military Students Review, and will be at 2 p.m. on Sept. 21 on the Gen. William "Lipp" Livsey Drill Field in Dahlonega. The Patriot Choir will also perform during the review.
The band's annual performance at the Gold Rush Parade will begin at 3 p.m. on Oct. 18 in downtown Dahlonega. The band has two performances planned for the month of November: the Veterans Day Parade at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 on the drill field and a competition show preview at 7 p.m. on Nov. 16 at Dawson County Middle School.
There will also be several free concerts by various UNG musical groups in the Gloria Shott Performance Hall on the Dahlonega Campus during the fall months and into the winter. Additionally, voice students will put on numerous recitals throughout the semester.
