Whether new to the University of North Georgia (UNG) or a returning student, the first week of school is always the most exciting. Classes start at noon on Aug. 18 on all four UNG campuses.
Various events are planned throughout the first few weeks of classes on every campus to welcome students, including a new event on UNG's Oconee Campus – Nighthawks UNight – that will bring first-time freshmen together to share a meal, see a Blue Ridge Rifles performance, and meet Nigel, the university's new Nighthawk mascot.
All welcome events encourage new and returning students to branch out, make friends, and introduce students to school clubs and organizations, while enjoying what the community has to offer. Listed below are just a few of the many events each campus will hold during the first few weeks:
- On Wednesday, Aug. 27, students at the Cumming Campus are invited to join UNG President Bonita Jacobs in room 125 at noon for free pizza. Faculty and staff are also welcome to attend to mingle with the president and students.
- Downtown Dahlonega invites students, faculty and staff downtown off the Dahlonega Campus for free music, food and other activities on Thursday, Aug. 21. There will be vendor booths around the square from 4 to 6 p.m., and music and food from 4 to 8 p.m. Also on the Dahlonega Campus, the First Saturday of Service will feature UNG students working on community service projects throughout Dahlonega and Lumpkin County from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23. The starting location will be the Hoag Student Center patio, or in the dining area inside Hoag if it rains.
- From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 18, the Gainesville Campus will host the Welcome Back Picnic, where students can enjoy a picnic and visit with various student success offices. The event will be held on the front patio outside the student center, or inside the student center commons if it rains. The Office of Student Involvement will hold Nighthawks Fest on Wednesday, Aug. 27 at the student center front patio, from noon to 1 p.m. and 5 to 6 p.m. Students can enjoy free food, learn more about clubs and organizations on campus, find out what local area vendors have to offer students, and receive a Weeks of Welcome t-shirt at this event.
- The Oconee Campus will have Weeks of Welcome info tents set up from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18 and Tuesday, Aug. 19 at the quad, where faculty, staff and student leaders will welcome students to campus as they give out student handbooks and help with questions. On Wednesday, Aug. 27 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the quad, Nighthawks UNight will invite all first-time freshmen to attend an outdoor event that includes sharing a free meal with their class members, a performance by some of the Blue Ridge Rifles, meeting UNG's new mascot, and building meaningful relationships with their peers, faculty and staff members.
Students should check with their campus' Office of Student Involvement or Student Activity Board, and the http://calender.ung.edu website to stay connected with upcoming events on all four campuses.
