The Gainesville Theatre Alliance (GTA) will present an Asian adaptation of "Sleeping Beauty" that will run Sept. 26 through Oct. 4 at Brenau University's Historic Pearce Auditorium.
"Sleeping Beauty" is a production by WonderQuest, the young audiences division of GTA, a nationally acclaimed collaboration of the University of North Georgia (UNG), Brenau University, theater professionals and the northeast Georgia community.
"This adaptation has been written and created by GTA. It sets the story of 'Sleeping Beauty' in an Asian garden complete with a 15-foot dragon," said Jim Hammond, artistic and managing director of GTA and head of UNG's Theatre Department. "Visually, the sets, lights and costumes are spectacular."
Gay H. Hammond, WonderQuest director and a theatre instructor at Brenau, wrote the adaptation and directs the performance. The production team is a combination of students, faculty, staff, and guest professionals. This family-friendly presentation is a classic fairy tale of honor, courage and kindness. The performance follows the tale of a princess who is born and is showered with love and blessings, but a jealous fairy waits to destroy the happiness of those who slighted her.
There will be evening performances at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 26 and 27 and Oct. 3 and 4 and matinee performances at 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 28 and Oct. 4.
Tickets are $10-12 for adults and seniors and $7-8 for students and children, depending on seat location. UNG students, faculty and staff receive discounts for $5 tickets with a valid UNG ID. Select your seats by registering online at gta.ung.edu or by calling the box office at 678-717-3624.
The cast and crew will host several activities open to the public related to the performance. On Sept. 16, there will be a free stage tour where guests will get a sneak peek behind the scenes at 6 p.m. Following the first performance on Sept. 26, there will be a free reception where ticket-holders can meet the cast and crew. Ticket-holders for the Sept. 28 show will be treated to a free ice cream social with the cast following the performance.
As a special pre-show treat, patrons ages 6-12 are invited on Oct. 3 and 4 to "Cherry Blossom & Dragon Tea," a play time of arts, crafts, snacks and dragon games. Children will meet in the Pearce Auditorium lobby at 6:25 p.m. and then head to the dragon clubhouse for the event. Tickets are $5.
Brenau University's Pearce Auditorium is located at 500 Washington St. SE, Gainesville, Georgia 30501. For more information on the show or GTA in general, visit their website at gta.ung.edu.
