Dr. George Danns, professor of sociology and faculty senate chair at the University of North Georgia (UNG), won the gold medal and became the 2015 World Champion in combat weapons sparring at the American Taekwondo Association's Tournament of Champions in July. He also won the silver medal in sparring. Both medals were in the 60 years and older category for first-, second- and third-degree black belts.
"Doing this gives me great joy as well as keeps me sane if not also healthy,” Danns said. "It enables a synergy for ideas and confident action."
Danns is also the 2015 state champion and Southeast regional champion in traditional forms, sparring, traditional weapons, and combat sparring weapons. He holds a second-degree black belt.
