UNG announces softball national championship trophy tour

The Nighthawks Nation will have another opportunity to celebrate the University of North Georgia (UNG) softball team's 2015 National Championship on Tuesday, Sept. 1 as the UNG softball team takes part in a National Championship Trophy Tour.

UNG campus groups, local businesses and schools will have photo opportunities with the trophy beginning that morning, with the tour making as many stops as needed before capping the day with the trophy's return to the display in Coleman Field House, home of the UNG softball team.

The traveling caravan will include the National Championship trophy, head coach Mike Davenport, Nigel the Nighthawk and members of the 2015 championship team. Groups will be able to take photos with the trophy, mascot, coaches and players, as well as hear a brief message from Davenport by either signing up for a stop or joining the caravan at the final stop at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium at 5 p.m.

The busy day of celebration will end with UNG Athletics hosting Dahlonega Chamber of Commerce's Business After Hours at Coleman Field House. The event, which starts at 5:30 p.m., is open to UNG faculty and staff, Nighthawks Athletic Club members and Chamber of Commerce members.

"This championship title belongs to all of us," Davenport told the crowd at nearly 1 a.m. following the team's return to Dahlonega on May 26. "It belongs to the players, the alumni, the university and the local community, and everyone who has supported us. We brought back the gold for you. I am so proud of this team."

The Nighthawks Nation is encouraged to post photos of their group with the trophy on all social media platforms using the hashtag #UNGTrophyTour15.

As part of the Trophy Tour, the team will be recognized by the city of Dahlonega and Lumpkin County Board of Commissioners in a special tour stop at 4 p.m. at Hancock Park in downtown Dahlonega. Chris Dockery, board chairman, and Dahlonega Mayor Gary McCullough will present the team with a proclamation honoring the team's historic season.

Sign up for a stop on the National Championship Trophy Tour by filling out the online form. A member of the UNG athletic administrative staff will be contacting all registered groups to confirm the RSVP and schedule the approximate arrival time.
