UNG freshman selected for national civic award

University of North Georgia (UNG) freshmen John Blessing has been selected for Campus Compact's Newman Civic Fellows Class of 2016.

Blessing is one of 218 student leaders representing Campus Compact member colleges and universities from 36 states; Washington, DC and Mexico.

Campus Compact is a national coalition of nearly 1,100 colleges and universities committed to the public purposes of higher education and the only national higher education association dedicated solely to campus-based civic engagement.

The Newman Civic Fellows Award honors student leaders committed to creating lasting change in communities both local and global.

Blessing, a political science major, has distinguished himself as a leader for positive social change at UNG and as an active member of the group Students for a Progressive Society. He helped organize and lead initiatives aimed at eradicating political apathy and encouraging open dialogue and engagement.

Additionally, he is at work on an event geared toward encouraging students to vote. Off campus, Blessing has been involved in several political campaigns, both at the local and national level.
