University of North Georgia (UNG) President Bonita C. Jacobs has been selected to chair the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) Committee on Economic and Workforce Development.
The committee helps AASCU institutions enhance the scope and visibility of their outreach efforts in partnership with their communities and regions and also urges states to include the higher education community as an essential partner in statewide economic development efforts.
"State colleges and universities play a vital role in the economic development of the communities we serve," Jacobs said. "Our mutually-beneficial relationships and the resulting partnerships help address workforce needs and increase educational and job opportunities."
Some federal policy priorities of the economic and workforce development committee include the support of federal grants focused on urban communities that address specific needs unique to the urban environment, such as teacher enhancement and college access.
AASCU is a higher education association of nearly 420 public colleges, universities and systems whose members share a learning and teaching-centered culture, a historic commitment to underserved student populations and a dedication to research and creativity that advances their regions' economic progress and cultural development.
