Grant paves way for seminar on civic mission
(Feb. 13, 2013) The Association of American Colleges and Universities’ (AACU) Bringing Theory to Practice Project has awarded a seminar grant to the University of North Georgia to hold “Civic Provocations: Engagement and Citizenship at UNG.”
For the past decade, the mission of the Bringing Theory to Practice Project has been to examine, understand, and encourage the interdependent relationships in higher learning, student well-being, civic development, and the initiating and sustaining of transformational changes in higher education.
“This seminar is a real opportunity for us to engage with other members of our campus community and seriously discuss our civic mission, and how we can promote the practices of civic engagement,” said Dr. Renee Bricker, assistant professor of history at UNG.
Bricker said the seminar will feature accessible, brief essays that consider dimensions of what "centering attention to the civic" might mean and involve. Civic Provocations urges deepened consideration and campus conversations, both of which are needed for designing actions required to realize a civic mission. Through the guided, interactive seminar, participants will discuss and brainstorm ideas; each participant will receive a free copy of the discussion to keep and a certificate of participation for professional development.
“This event will help us move a step closer to realizing our shared goals related to active citizenship,’ Bricker said. “It will be chance to catch our collective breath and think about civic mission as a re-envisioned institution.”
In January, North Georgia College & State University consolidated with Gainesville State College and the consolidated institution was renamed the University of North Georgia. Both schools shared common values and goals, including a commitment to civic engagement and service.
The seminar will be held on March 8 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the President’s Dining Room on the Dahlonega campus. Registration is required by Feb. 28 by emailing email@example.com. The seminar includes lunch.
