Orientation & Transition Programs (OTP)

Important Update

Please note that changes have been made to Parent and Family Orientation.

Orientation is still occurring for summer and fall 2020 starters. Read below to learn more about how the orientation program has been redesigned to ensure the safety of our students, guests, and campus partners.

All newly admitted degree-seeking freshman, transfers and readmit students are required to complete the orientation requirement prior to starting classes, regardless of previously earned transfer or dual enrolled credits. This will include the following components:

  1. Complete the Orientation Reservation process, which includes the Online Pre-Orientation Modules.
  2. Based on your reservation date, Summer starters, Fall starters and Readmit students will complete the orientation course in the eLearning system (D2L).
  3. Attend the August in-person session (fall freshman and transfers only).

More details regarding the orientation course and in-person component are provided below.

All incoming students are required to complete the Online Pre-Orientation (OPO). Non-degree seeking students who are not required to complete the full orientation program, can access these modules on the Check Application Status page.

Fall 2020 Starter Information

New Student Orientation (NSO) for Freshman and Transfer Student Orientation for Fall Starters

Freshman and Transfer students who will be beginning courses in the fall term will participate in a hybrid orientation format – a combination of online coursework and a face-to-face component in August.

The date students initially select in the orientation reservation system will be the start date for the course.

Academic Advisors will begin reaching out to students to assist with building a fall course schedule based on this course start date.

Course Capacity

The online courses will be available starting in June, but each course has a maximum capacity.

We cannot over-ride that capacity. When making an orientation reservation, students will need to select a course that still has seats available.

This course will be offered through the eLearning (D2L) platform. Students will receive more details from the Orientation office on how to access the course approximately two weeks prior to the course start date.

Fall 2020 Online Orientation Course

To begin to prepare you for our in-person orientation experience in August, we have created an additional set of presentations and helpful tips in the Orientation Fall 2020 Course. You will receive an email with instructions regarding the course one-week before your initially scheduled orientation date. You will not be able to access the course until your initially scheduled orientation date. (This means that if you previously registered for an Orientation on June 15 you would have access to the Orientation Fall 2020 Course on June 15 in addition to your in-person August Orientation).

This is a self-paced course and you do not have to be logged in at a specific time.

Get help using D2L.

D2L Course Completion and Fall Class Registration

Once a student has completed the Orientation Fall 2020 online course in D2L we will open their course registration time tickets on set dates. The student has to receive an 85% or higher on the Orientation Content Quiz located in the Next Steps module to complete the course.

The set dates are:

If a student completes the course by June 25 at 12:00 p.m.. they will have a time ticket opening on July 1.

If a student completes the course by July 16 at 12:00 p.m.. they will have a time ticket opening on July 17.

If a student completes the course by July 28 at 12:00 p.m. they will have a time ticket opening on July 29.

Please remember students do not have access to the Orientation Fall 2020 course until their initial orientation date.  For example, if a student does not have access until July 20 they can have a time ticket as early as July 29 if completion of the course is made prior to the July 28 deadline.

Students will receive communication regarding their Fall 2020 class schedule from an Academic Advisor prior to the start of term. However, if a student wishes to change their class schedule they can do so after a time ticket is opened.

Some populations of students will not have the ability to change their schedules based on class limitations or restrictions. This includes, but is not limited to, student athletes and students with learning support requirements. If these students wish to alter their schedules, they need to contact their specific academic advisor or athletic program coordinator.

In-Person Component

Each online course will be paired with an in-person component in August prior to the start of fall term.

Students must successfully complete the online course as well as attend the in-person component in order to meet the orientation requirement. The orientation hold will remain on the student account until the student has attended the in-person orientation in August.

When students select their course in the reservation system, they will see that it is paired with a specific August session time and date. Students should only select a course and in-person combination that works for their schedule.

We are closely monitoring the current health guidelines and will adapt the in-person orientation component to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and USG guidelines.

Dahlonega Residential Students

In-Person Date

All freshman residential students will have an August in-person orientation date based on their move-in time and date. Residence Life will be coordinating the move-in sign-up process. Students should begin monitoring their UNG email toward the end of May for more information on this process.

It will be either August 13, 14, or 15, depending on your move-in time.

Residential Student Orientation Fee

Your orientation fee will be reduced to $75. If you have already paid the original fee of $130, a credit of $55 will be applied to your student account and can be used toward your fall semester tuition and fees. Any credit after all tuition and fees are paid will be disbursed through the normal fall disbursement of refund process.

This fee covers the costs associated with this program, including Orientation Leader stipends, program materials, technology costs, first-year programming and costs associated with early move-in.

If you are unable to pay the student orientation fee at the time you make your reservation, you can request the fee remain on your tuition and fee bill until fall payment is due by completing the payment extension form.

Cadet Information

All incoming FROGs will have a Saturday, August 8 in-person orientation beginning at 9:00 a.m.

  • Uniform Fittings will be on Friday, August 7. The Military Store will be communicating with students regarding the fitting time sign-up process. Students who are unable to be fitted on August 7 will be fitted on the August 9.

Readmit Student Orientation (RSO)

All Readmit students will complete an asynchronous orientation course prior to the start of term. This course will be offered through the eLearning (D2L) platform.

When students enter the orientation reservation system, they will see the course listed as a Dahlonega campus option. Courses are offered approximately every two weeks and we recommend students select the first available course date. The orientation hold will be lifted once students successfully complete the course.

We strongly encourage you to reserve a seat in the first session available that works for your schedule. Please be sure to mark your calendar for the session you sign-up to attend and do not double-book yourself on orientation day.

You are required to participate in the full session, and absolutely no early class schedule adjustments will be permitted on the day of the program.

3. Confirm Your Reservation

You will receive an automated email to confirm your reservation. Please note that payment is requested at the time of reservation. However, payment extensions for student orientation reservations will be granted if needed. 4. Parent & Family Orientation Reservations

Your confirmation email will contain instructions on how to reserve a seat for your parent or family members for Parent and Family Orientation (PFO).

This program happens on the same day and time as your orientation, but parents and family members must be signed up separately and will be participating in their own program, while your orientation is in progress.

You are encouraged to reserve their seat at PFO when you reserve your own seat for orientation, but can also wait if needed.

5. Changing Your Reservation

If you need to change your orientation date, you must make the change prior to the cancellation date of your current reservation.

You can make an orientation reservation change by logging back into your student banner account, going to the Orientation Reservation form on the student tab, and selecting the view orientation details option.

Once viewing your reservation details, scroll to the bottom of the page to click the modify reservation button. This will lead you through the steps to update your reservation. Please note you can only modify your reservation one time.
