Interdisciplinary Leadership Minor

The Interdisciplinary Leadership Minor aims to equip you with an integrated understanding of leadership theory and practice. The minor focuses on training the best leaders through teaching, research, and service in order to acquire the skills necessary to generate, disseminate, integrate, and apply knowledge in practical settings while engaging in collaborative activities across departments at UNG.

Leadership Tracks

Organizational Leadership Track

The Organizational Leadership track consists of courses that focus on organizational structure, organizational success, and management in organizational settings. Course options are from the Business, Psychology, Communications, and Sociology departments.

Students who pursue this track gain leadership competencies necessary for leading within organizations.

This track is appropriate for those interested in complementing their major with skills and knowledge to lead in the workplace.

Leadership in Society Track

The Leadership in Society track consists of courses that focus on understanding your community, communication, and interacting with your community. Course options are from the Communications, Human Services Delivery and Administration, and Sociology departments.

Students who pursue this track gain leadership competencies necessary for leading within their community.

This track is appropriate for those interested in complementing their major with skills and knowledge related to becoming a community leader.

Global Leadership Track

The Global Leadership track consists of courses that focus on leadership from an international perspective. Course options are from the Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Military Science departments.

Students who pursue this track gain leadership competencies that emphasize leading in a globalized society.

This track is appropriate for those interested in complementing their major with skills and knowledge to lead across cultures.

Potential Leadership Minor Tracks by Major

Art

Students will benefit from the Organizational Leadership Track of the Leadership as many students will go on to open their own art studios, or organizations in areas such as photography, sculpture, painting, etc. The theories and fundamentals taught in the Organizational Leadership track will help these students to succeed in a field that is dominated by privately owned companies.

Art Education

Students will benefit from the Organizational Leadership track of the Leadership as many of them will go into the same areas of Organizational Leadership as their counterparts who are taking courses in general art or art marketing. Artists may find that their background in Organizational Leadership will help them to navigate the educational sector as well as the Organizational Leadership aspect of their discipline. The theories and fundamentals taught in the Organizational Leadership of the leadership minor will help these students to succeed in an educational setting and in an Organizational Leadership setting.

Art Marketing

Students focusing on art marketing will find exceptional benefit in the Organizational Leadership track of the Leadership. This track is an excellent way for students to gain knowledge and understanding in the areas of Organizational Leadership as well as courses in organizational management that will help them to succeed in a marketing and Organizational Leadership environment upon graduation.

Athletic Training

Students from the Athletic Training major will find that athletic trainers often work within the private sector. With the courses taught in the Organizational Leadership track of the Leadership Minor, students will be well prepared for success in an Organizational Leadership setting, and will learn leadership skills that will help them to succeed.

Biology

Students in the field of Biology often find employment in the areas of healthcare, government, education, industry, and others. Each of these areas is dominated by organizations. Biology students would find the Organizational Leadership track of the Leadership Minor to be very beneficial to their career opportunities as the courses that are taught in this track are geared to help them succeed in the areas of ethics, organizational theory, communication, conflict resolution, and social stratification.

Chinese

Students of the Chinese language often find employment in the military, government, and with private companies. These students understand that they are going to work in a global environment, and often want to supplement their knowledge of language with knowledge of leadership. The Global Leadership track of the Leadership minor strikes a perfect balance between global education and leadership education. Language student will learn from courses in globalization, international political science, adaptive leadership, and advanced leadership. 

Computer Science

Students of Computer Science often find employment in an organizational setting. Those students who want to supplement their Computer Science background with leadership skills and organizational knowledge will benefit tremendously from the Organizational Track of the Leadership Minor.

Criminal Justice

Students of Criminal Justice would benefit from courses in leadership and Organizational Leadership. Often, police departments and other agencies value the skills and understanding from candidates who have studied Criminal Justice, but who also have an understanding of management practices and leadership. This track is unique in that it provides a sound balance between general leadership courses and Organizational Leadership courses that will help the Criminal Justice student stand out in her field.

Criminal Justices students take courses related to crime, law, corrections, and criminology. There are a few courses that students are offered that relate to organizational leadership. This track will help students to become leaders in their field and will help them to understand and navigate the nuances of the Criminal Justice system. The Criminal Justice system is made up of a variety of organizations that work together in an effort to make society a better place. Students in this track will learn principles of conflict resolution, public communication, social stratification, occupations and organizations, and other courses that will help students succeed in this challenging and rewarding field.

Early Childhood and Special Education

Early Childhood and Special Education majors often work in the education field, human services, and in religious settings. Having an in-depth understanding of how organizations work and the principles of leadership will help these students to succeed in their future employment.

English Education

Those studying English Education will find the Organizational Leadership minor helpful if they plan to work within the field of Education or in the private sector. Students will find the Organizational Leadership track to be helpful if they want to learn more about how organizations work, what leadership roles are within organizations, and what to gain knowledge that will benefit them in future leadership roles.

Exercise Science

Students studying Exercise Science are studying to become professionals in their field. Such students would benefit from leadership courses and Organizational Leadership courses to help them to succeed in the field of Exercise Science. The leadership theories and Organizational Leadership theories will help exercise science students to succeed in the areas of management and leadership, two important aspects in the Exercise Science discipline.

French

Students of French often find employment in the military, government, education, nonprofits and with private companies. These students understand that they are going to work in a global environment, and often want to supplement their knowledge of the French language with knowledge of leadership. The Global Leadership track of the Leadership minor strikes an excellent balance between global education and leadership education. Language student will learn from courses in globalization, international political science, adaptive leadership, and advanced leadership. 

General Studies x3
Students completing their degree requirement for the General Studies degree would benefit from the Organizational Leadership Track of the Leadership Minor as the leadership skills are valued in nearly any discipline that the student would work in. The Organizational Leadership courses will help the student to understand the fundamentals of management practices, Organizational Leadership communication practices, and will learn about leadership in a way that will enhance their marketability in the private sector.

Students studying a course load of interdisciplinary studies will find that the Organizational Track of the Leadership minor will help them in any field that they chose. The skills that are learned in the Organizational Track of the Leadership Minor can easily be transferred into many different fields. Students in the General Studies program will find the value in understanding how organizations operate and understanding organizational principles.

Students completing a General Studies degree will gain a great deal of knowledge in the Global Leadership track of the Leadership Minor that they will be able to bring to nearly any career they seek. Students will have the opportunity to learn leadership skills, understand global politics, gain a global perspective, and much more in the Global Leadership track of the Leadership Minor.

History Education

Students of History frequently find employment in education, government, and related fields. Those who wish to enhance their knowledge of the history of certain regions of the world with a current understanding of the political environment will benefit from the Global Leadership track of the Leadership Minor. The minor will help students to learn leadership skills within a global setting that will give them the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in a global environment.

International Affairs

International Affairs students know the benefits of gaining knowledge of globalization, international relations, and related studies. They will often find employment with international organizations and companies. Those who wish to rise to a leadership position within a global company or government will find value in the Global Leadership track of the Leadership Minor.

Management

Management students who wish to work abroad, or for international organizations will find the courses in the Global Leadership track of the Leadership Minor to be a valuable for their future careers. Students of Management will learn advanced leadership skills, and gain a global perspective of leadership that will supplement their education in Management.

Mathematics

Students of Mathematics often work in financial institutions, research, teaching, and in other organizational settings. Students who want to supplement their skills in Mathematics with leadership and organizational skills will benefit greatly from the Organizational Track of the Leadership Minor.

Nursing

Nursing students prepare to work in a fast-paced organizational setting. Those who aspire to leadership positions will benefit greatly from the Organizational Leadership track of the Leadership Minor. The courses that make up this track are geared towards students who want to be leaders in their field and who want to understand how organizations work.

Organization Administration

Students actively completing their degree requirements will find real value to a minor in Leadership in the Organizational Leadership Track. This track is appropriate for students who would like to use some of their elective courses in a way that is focused. The Leadership Minor will give students a background in Organizational Leadership ethics, management, leadership practices in Organizational Leadership, and a deeper understanding of organizations and organizational behavior.

Students studying Organizational Administration would benefit a great deal from the courses offered in the Organizational Leadership Track. Students will gain an understanding for such topics as ethics and values, conflict resolution, public opinion and leadership, and much more. Students in the track will gain knowledge that will serve them well in an organizational setting as the courses in this track are geared towards students who wish to succeed in organizations such as corporations.

Organizations are increasingly becoming connected to the global economy and markets. With this in mind, the Global Leadership track of the Leadership Minor helps students of Organization Administration to succeed in an Organizational Leadership climate that favors globalization. Students will learn leadership skills that will help them in their field, and will study courses in policy, global politics and other courses that will help them to be competitive leaders in the Organizational sector.

Physics

Physics students frequently find a career path in major technical corporations and with research institutions. Having a background in leadership and organizational principles will help students to make a transition into management and leadership positions if they desire such positions. The Organizational Leadership track of the Leadership Minor will help these students to develop an understanding of how organizations operate and how to be a leader in the private or public sectors.

Political Science

Political Science students who plan to work abroad or within agencies that have an international focus will find the Global Leadership track of the Leadership Minor to be helpful and rewarding. Students will learn adaptive leadership, advanced leadership skills and knowledge of the globalization, politics of different regions of the world, and gain a global perspective on their discipline.

Psychology

Students of Psychology find themselves in a wide variety of occupations upon graduation. Having a unique minor in Leadership in the Organizational Leadership will allow students who work in the field of Organizational Leadership and related fields to have an advantage. Students will have learn a great deal about Organizational Leadership and organizational practices, and will be well versed in the theories of Organizational Leadership and management. Also, students will benefit from courses in organizational communication and human resources, as these are important aspects of the Organizational Leadership sector and related fields.

Psychology students will find value in the Organizational Leadership track of the Leadership Minor. Students of Psychology may find employment in sales, marketing, real estate, labor-relations, and other management occupations. Having a solid background in an area that focuses on areas of the career that matter, such as communication, conflict resolution, and leadership will help students to successful in their chosen field.

Sociology

Students of Sociology have a unique set of skills that are marketable in the private sector. With a Leadership Minor with the Organizational Leadership track, these students can stand out even more when they seek employment in the private sector. Once in the private sector, students will find that the courses that they took in the Organizational Leadership track of the Leadership minor are perfectly suited for the challenges that they will face in an Organizational Leadership setting. The courses on human resources, communication, and Organizational Leadership ethics will prove invaluable to the student and will supplement her education in Sociology.

Students of Sociology will benefit from the Organizational Track of the Leadership minor as the courses taught correspond well with their background in human behavior as it relates to organizational structure. The Organizational Leadership Track emphasizes aspects of leadership communication, conflict resolution, occupations and organizations, social stratification, and social movements. Students who find employment in education, government, or Organizational Leadership will find the Organizational track to be beneficial to their success in leadership positions in organizations.

Spanish

Students studying Spanish often find employment in the military, government, education and with private companies. These students understand that they are going to work in a global environment, and often want to supplement their knowledge of the Spanish language with knowledge of leadership. The Global Leadership track of the Leadership minor strikes an excellent balance between global education and leadership education. Language student will learn from courses in globalization, international political science, adaptive leadership, and advanced leadership.
