Beyond the Borders Conference
The Department of Criminal Justice and the Department of Spanish & Portuguese invite scholars to participate in Beyond the Borders: The interdisciplinary conference on studies in spanish and criminal justice. As the issues of immigration, displacement, borders, and identify permeate national discourse, this conference seeks to foster dialogue between both disciplines on these topics and similar issues.
About the Conference
The first edition of the Beyond the Borders conference is going to be held on April 2-3, 2020 at the University of North Georgia (UNG) on the Dahlonega Campus.The Conference provides a forum to present and participate on topics related to the following areas:
- Immigration
- Border studies
- The U.S.-Mexico border
- Latinx studies
- Diaspora and displacement
- Detention and arrest patterns
- Policies and political rhetoric
- El Nuevo / New south
- Appeals processes and asylum
- Forensic linguistics
- Crime fiction
- Narcoculture
- Criminal Justice and popular culture
- Law enforcement & language Pedagogy
- Law Enforcement, translation & language barriers
- Immigration & language policies
- Transnational criminal law
- Political economy and security technologies
- Mass mobility and human smuggling
- Gendered harm, women and violence in the justice system
This conference is open to graduate students and faculty. We welcome presentations in Spanish, English, or a mixture of both. Specifics about presentation guidelines are contained in our call for papers (PDF). The deadline to submit an abstract is Monday, December 2 at noon.
The conference is hosted by UNG and represented by the College of Arts and Letters. There is no registration fee.

The conference will be held on on the Dahlonega Campus at the Hoag Student Center in the Meeting Room ABC and at the Dunlap Hall Building.
