Stressed About COVID-19? UNG Student Counseling Offers Tips Video Transcript

Hi, I'm Dr. Simon Cordery, director of Student Counseling for the University of North Georgia. I know that there's a lot of anxiety going around about COVID-19 and all the changes to our daily life.

Here are some tips to help you cope during this difficult time.

Number one, during difficult times it's easy to start to think that it's going to be this way forever, but I want to remind you that this is temporary and things will get better.

Number two, remember that human beings function better with a routine, so try to keep a routine in your daily life with the same bedtime, the same time you get up, the same time you eat, sleep, work and play.

Number three, incorporate healthy coping mechanisms into your life. At difficult times, it's easy to smoke too much, drink too much, sleep too much, eat too much, game too much. So try to minimize these activities and work to incorporate more healthy coping mechanisms into your life, as well things like exercise or diet, a new hobby or a project that can keep your mind stimulated.

Number four, pay attention to your mental health. Spend some time each day to express your feelings about what's going on to others or journal about it. You can also engage in things like deep breathing, grounding through your senses, or progressive muscle relaxation for self-care. YouTube has tons of great content around this, but Student Counseling can also help you find these as well.

Number five, remember that you're not alone, even though at times like this it sure can feel like it. Reach out to others if you're not doing well and remember that professionals are there if you're not doing well.

As far as Student Counseling is concerned, we're doing our best to respond to changes and remain available to our students. We switched to a predominantly video treatment model that's available to both established and new patients.

There are some situations in which you may need to be seen in person or by local resources, but talk to Student  Counseling and we can help you work through that. Most situations can be worked through online.
