Biology major with a Chemistry minor

What year in school are you? 


Interesting fact? 

I studied Spanish for six years and have probably forgotten more than I remember. 

What do you do outside of being a busy student? 

I enjoy playing video games, reading, and watching anime.

What are your short-term and long-term goals, and how does SI (Supplemental Instruction) relate to those? 

What short-term goals are to obtain my B.S. in Biology while growing my leadership and interpersonal skills, while my long-term goal is to attend medical school. SI facilitates the growth of these skills, and I hope to one day apply them in my own private practice as General Practitioner. 

What is your favorite SI moment? 

My favorite SI moment is when a topic will “click” with one student, and then that student will turn around and explain it to everyone else in a new or different way, especially if this helps another student gain a better understanding of the material.

What have you gained from being an SI facilitator?

I have gained a much better sense of time management and a greater confidence in interacting with new people. I’ve also realized how much I enjoy helping student understand course material and helping them become better students.

What study tips/techniques do you have for students? 

Speaking from personal experience, do not try to study for an exam a few days before; it only serves to set yourself up for failure. It is also a great idea to form study groups. Courses I would have had a difficult time in were made easier just because I had others who were there to help me and keep me on task. 

What do you like/what excites you about the material you SI for? 

I like the challenge that comes with it; every problem is like a puzzle and the hardest thing to do is understand what information is important and how to manipulate that into an answer. Few other courses are like this, and I enjoy flexing the problem-solving part of my brain.

What has been your favorite collaborative learning technique (CLT) that you have done in your sessions? 

I love activities that get every student involved at the same time, especially if it can instill a little healthy competition. I use matching games a lot, where students have to use their knowledge of course material and their memory to get points. I find that even when students don’t seem that involved in the session, activities like this can bring everyone together.
