Kevin Brakhage

What is your major?

Chemistry

What year in school are you?

Junior

Interesting fact?

- I've been to six different countries in a five-year span.
- The most fun I've ever had was living in six-foot-deep snow for two months.
- Once made a warm tea from pine needles just because I was curious.
- I became interested in Chemistry because I specialized in explosives in the Marine Corps.
- I played semi-pro football for two years.
- I've eaten camel.

What do you do outside of being a busy student?

I lift weights five times a week and try to read one non-school related book a week. I’m also a lab TA and I’m involved in four research projects here are UNG.

How many semesters have you been facilitating?

One

Which courses do you facilitate for now, or have in the past?

CHEM 1211

What are your short-term goals, and how does SI (Supplemental Instruction) relate to those?

My short-term goals are to get back on the Presidents list here at UNG. Also, to continue to hone leadership skills learned in the Marine Corps. SI provides me with the ability to review general chemistry concepts and to continue developing leadership skills.

What have you gained from being an SI facilitator?

Planning skills and time management.

What study tips/techniques do you have for students?

More than anything else, don’t quit. You may not understand the material now, but with prolonged exposure it’ll come to you.

What do you like/what excites you about the material you SI for?

I just love chemistry. I am a Chemistry major after all.

What has been your favorite collaborative learning technique (CLT) that you have done in your sessions?

My favorite is where I'll write information on the board, right or wrong, and the students will pick each other at random to correct or answer the information and then the group will decide if all the information has been corrected or answered properly.
