Katelyn LeBlanc

Where do you work, and what do you do in your current occupation?

I am self-employed as the business owner and photographer of Katelyn LeBlanc Photography. I have been working for myself full-time for nearly two years as a portrait and family photographer.

What do you enjoy about your current to occupation? Do you consider yourself successful? In what way?

I love so many things about what I do, but mostly I love getting to spend time with families and individuals doing what I love. I love being around people and learning their stories, while also being creative and providing a fun experience and beautiful images for them.

I also love the freedom and flexibility of working for myself. I believe I have been successful in being able to have a fulfilling job that I enjoy and look forward to doing every day, and that gives me the freedom to also enjoy my life outside of work.

What led you to pursue your current line of work?

I studied photography at DoVA, and my first job out of college was as a photographer for a chain of clothing boutiques, coordinating and leading multiple photo shoots every week. This was an invaluable experience that gave me a lot of confidence in my skill as a photographer. I worked there for a couple of years before transitioning to a job as a marketing coordinator for an art gallery that was closer to where I lived. I realized quickly that although I enjoyed the work I was doing, there were various reasons that that job was not the right fit for me. In March of 2018, I left the art gallery to pursue photography full-time, and it turned out to be the best decision for me!

Do the skills and knowledge that you gained as a student in the Department of Visual Arts (DoVA) contribute to your current occupation? If so, in what way?

Absolutely! I studied Art Marketing with a concentration in Photography at DoVA, and it completely gave me the foundation for every job that I have pursued since graduating. From the studio art classes, to graphic design, to the art history and photography classes, I feel that the knowledge and skills I gained as a student have prepared me to be able to transition those skills into a career that I love!

Now that you have a vantage point to reflect on your art education, what would you do differently?

Looking back, I feel that I had an amazing experience at UNG DoVA. I truly enjoyed the classes and work that I did during my time as a student. The only thing I may have done differently was take more art history classes, because those were some of my favorites!

Do you have any words of wisdom for current DoVA students?

Keep working hard, and don’t be afraid to ask questions! Reach out to people that inspire you and you will be surprised at the knowledge and connections you will make. People will be more willing and interested in sharing with you than you might think. Make the most of your years at UNG because they will fly by!
