Jamie Raper

Where do you work, and what do you do in your current occupation?

I am employed with Geosyntec Consultants. In my current position, I manage the external communications flow and advertising for all 97 of our global offices. Additional tasks that I perform include managing graphics, creative writing, website content, social media, and paid advertising. I am also responsible for the video editing.

What do you enjoy about your current to occupation? Do you consider yourself successful? In what way?

I really enjoy developing strategies that help grow our business. As far as being successful, I would say a great deal of the time. In order to be successful, you have to constantly change and tweak your strategy in order to keep up with what’s current in the advertising realm.

What led you to pursue your current line of work?

I have always loved Marketing, particularly the visual aspect of it. I was going to study art education at first because of my love for mentoring. However, I found that business and communication was similar to problem-solving, so it was more like solving puzzles and it seemed more fun to me. I also get to spend time as a mentor so it’s kind of like the best of both of my professional passions.

Do the skills and knowledge that you gained as a student in the Department of Visual Arts (DoVA) contribute to your current occupation? If so, in what way?

I use both the knowledge and technical skills I learned in college daily. They are kind of like the tools in my tool belt. By taking many different art classes, I was able to be exposed to a large selection of communication styles. Also, art history really lends itself in the strategy realm when communicating with the public.

Now that you have a vantage point to reflect on your art education, what would you do differently?

Looking back, I would have taken more writing and creative writing courses that corresponds with art history courses to allow me to be able to develop a broader strategy scope. Mass communication is 50% words and 50% images so the demand for writing is a must along with anything adobe.

Do you have any words of wisdom for current DoVA students?

Be sure to do as many internships as you can because most graduates have had three internships before graduating college just to stay competitive. Also, if you have trouble getting a job right after graduating, I would highly recommend temp services like the Creative Group or Creative Circle because they will send you on temp jobs and they will teach you how to learn quickly and become deadline driven. It will also help you with interviews and build your portfolio for whenever you do get the job opportunity you want. Finally, network as much as possible.
