Hidden Content in Cascade

With the new flex design, you can create sections and columns in a  web page, to change how web content is arranged. This gives you much more flexibility when laying out a page.

Most of the time, changing the number of columns is not an issue. However, if you accidentally hide certain types of content, you will create an error that disrupts the functionality of your page.

How Does Content Become Hidden?

Content will become hidden if you do one of two things:

  1. Change a page from "with sidebar" to "without sidebar." (if there was content in the sidebar area)

      2. Decrease the number of columns in a section.  (if the removed columns had content)

While we are using images in this example, any type of content, whether it be a block, text or image can become hidden in the same way.

Behind the Scenes in Cascade

This is "behind the scenes" of the above page.

  • The layout features no sidebar, and three columns.

This is the same exact page, except instead of three columns, the two-column option is selected.

  • Selecting the two-column option will hide the third column in the WYSIWYG and the published page, but it will not delete the third column.
  • If you go back to three columns, the puppy in the cup will reappear in the third column in the WYSIWYG and when the page is published.

Why Should We Fix Hidden Content?

There are several reasons to avoid having hidden content:

  • You need the content to show up on your webpage. If it is hidden in the Cascade editor, then it also won’t show on the published page.
  • Hiding a news feed will prevent your page from publishing. If you have two feeds on your page, it will not publish.
  • Hidden content complicates webteam troubleshooting. We want to be able to diagnose your issue ASAP.

Getting Hidden Content to Show

If you think you might have hidden content, you can:

  1. Increase the number of columns.
  2. Check the extra columns for that content.
  3. Check if there is hidden sidebar content by selecting "with sidebar."
  4. If the sidebar content or the extra columns are empty, you are good to go and can change back to a reduced number of columns or "without sidebar."

Preventing Hidden Content

When reducing the number of columns, keep these steps in mind to avoid hidden content:

  1. Determine which columns will go away.
  2. If those columns have content, do you need that content anymore?
          a. If no, delete the content.
          b. If yes, move the content to a column that isn't being removed.
  3. Reduce the number of columns.
  4. Double check that you have all your content you need intact in the new reduced column layout.
  5. Save a draft or submit your page or block. (Note: At this point, if you were moving a news feed and still had it in a hidden column as well, it will bomb on you.)

When switching between "with sidebar" and "without sidebar," be sure to delete any content in the sidebar if you choose to publish the "without sidebar" option.
