Why did you join the Flagship program?
The Flagship program is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Learning Chinese and studying in China have been the most rewarding experiences of my life. I can't think of any good reason not to take this opportunity to go back and further improve my language proficiency before starting my Army career.
What was the best part about your study abroad experience?
I studied abroad in China for two months during the 2013 summer. I spent six weeks in Liaocheng and two in Beijing. The best part about my experience was making lifelong friendships with people despite the fact we didn't always completely understand each other. When people did understand me, it was a reminder of how far I had come, and when they didn't, it gave me the motivation to learn more.
What advice would you give to students interested in joining?
Accept the fact that it won't be easy, but don't let that discourage you. If it's something you love, then you will enjoy the challenge and enjoy watching yourself progress. Talk to your teachers and Flagship staff to make sure you are aware of every learning resource, every study abroad opportunity, and any financial assistance that is available to you. Take advantage of UNG's intensive language programs and take every possible opportunity to study abroad. If you put in the work, this program will be the most rewarding experience of your college career.
Serve the Army as a Military Intelligence or Infantry Officer and gradually become a polyglot.
