(HSDA students talk about the degree and their work in UNG's summer food program.)
(Monika Janderova of Czech Republic helps administer UNG's summer food program and is pursuing a master's)
Monika Janderova, HSDA graduate from Braselton, Georgia: It's a lot of paperwork lots of telephone calls lots of emails but it's just a pleasure to do that because it's a good cause. This program is awesome and UNG is a really good school and the students I know having like a awesome future they helping the communities and it's something wonderful to be part of.
(Haley Scott survived a near-fatal wreck in 2011 and wants to be an advocate for others with disabilities.)
Hayley Scott, junior majoring in HSDA from Alto, Georgia: Human Services just adds, puts all of those things together psychology and sociology and all of that and to basically helping hands. I also learned a lot from the children that are there because they helped me to look outside of myself. I believe that will help me be able to find my clients where they're at.
(Sam Holly starts his master's this fall and wants to address the issue of at-risk children from single-parent households.)
Sam Holly, graduate of HSDA program from Atlanta, Georgia: One man can change the world. I mean I believe anyone can change the world, including me. This program overall has just give me a sense of you know we're all connected and we're all trying to help or come up with ways in order to better help the community.
(Joanna Perez plans to pursue a master's degree and eventually work in the field of disaster relief.)
Joanna Perez, junior majoring in HSDA from Gainesville, Georgia: Not only does it feed the children but also alleviates the stress on the parents if they are worried about finding food for the kids providing for the kids. This relates to my degree in the way that I'm helping people and it's also allowing me to see how federally funded programs work like with paperwork, administration and just following all the guidelines.
(John Martin, a recipient of VA benefits himself, wants to help improve the system and counsel PTSD victims.)
John Martin, junior majoring in HSDA from Cumming, Georgia: Then with the children there's another interaction where I know one of my sites hey call me Superman so today for lunch actually I'm going to dress up in a Superman costume and go deliver lunch. I'm ... I go through the VA administration for my health care needs and it's inadequate to say the least, so I'd like to be able to get to an organization and make a positive difference.
(Karen Green wants to start an after-school program to help K-12 kids find their talents, while pursuing a master's.)
Karen Green, junior majoring in HSDA from Atlanta, Georgia: Wherever there is a need I love to be there and that's my passion. Because I believe these kids they have so much to offer and instead of being out on the street they have somewhere to go. And I want a state-of-the-art facility for these kids to go and enjoy themselves so they can figure out where they belong.
