Nighthawks Economics Showdown

The Nighthawks Economics Showdown is a competition and an educational program that aims to encourage high school students to learn more about economics. Other benefits are that students develop research and writing skills around a theme that UNG will designate each year. 

The theme for the 2024 competition is "The Post-COVID Labor Market".

Eligibility & Requirements

This program is open to all eligible students and teachers without regard to ethnicity, gender, religion (creed), age, disability, or any other discriminatory reason.

Requirements:

  • Participating high schools must be located in the Atlanta metropolitan area or the Northeast Georgia region. 
  • High school students must be enrolled in one of grades 9–12 at the time of registration.
  • High schools may register only one team for the competition and each team may submit only one entry each year. 
  • Each team will consist of three to eight students who must be enrolled at the participating high school at the time of registration.
  • Each team will be supervised by one faculty advisor who teaches economics or a closely-related discipline.

How to Enter

School teams must submit one paper directly related to the theme "The Post-COVID Labor Market" . The maximum length of each paper is 5,000 words excluding the title page and the references pages.

  • Registration Deadline: Friday, October 11, 2024
  • Essay Submission Deadline: Friday, November 1, 2024
  • Notification for Finalists: Monday, December 2, 2024
  • Finalists Video Submission Deadline: Friday, January 17, 2025
  • Announcement of Winner: Monday, February 3, 2025

2023 Winners

The team from Lambert High School in Suwanee, Georgia are the 2023 Winners of the Nighthawks Economics Showdown! 

They submitted an essay on "Globalization, Foreign Direct Investment, and Neocolonialism: An Exogenous Growth Perspective".
