Dr. Nicole Hollabaugh was inspired to become a college professor by the professors at her alma mater, Centre College, in Kentucky.

Now, the associate professor of chemistry at the University of North Georgia (UNG) has been recognized for her teaching ability. The Northeast Georgia Section of the American Chemical Society presented Hollabaugh with the G.E. Philbrook Teaching Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching.

"I can't believe I am getting recognized for something that I have wanted to do for so long," she said. "It is such a high honor."

Dr. Patricia Todebush, associate department head of chemistry, said Hollabaugh deserved the prestigious recognition. Hollabaugh earned tenure last year and consistently has great student evaluations, Todebush said.

"She is an outstanding organic chemistry professor," Todebush said. "She helps her students learn organic chemistry."

Hollabaugh said connecting with students is her favorite part of teaching.

"I try to get to know them. And I let them get to know me," she said, adding it helps develop a trust, which helps her students succeed.
