    GTA announces fall 2022 lineup

    September 14, 2022
Gainesville Theatre Alliance's fall 2022 lineup begins with WonderQuest's presentation of 'The Pirate Queen.'

    Article By: Denise Ray

The Gainesville Theatre Alliance (GTA) has announced its fall lineup of productions. GTA, a nationally-recognized collaboration between the University of North Georgia (UNG) and Brenau University, utilizes the strengths of faculty from both departments to lead students to become professional theatre artists.

"We are looking forward to getting back to a semblance of normal on the GTA stages. Our 2022-23 season is a mix of classic stories and modern musicals, and we are excited to share these experiences with our patrons," Keri McClain, marketing manager for GTA, said

The fall season opens with WonderQuest's presentation of "The Pirate Queen," which runs from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2. Tickets are on sale now on the GTA website, and the production will be at the Pearce Auditorium in Gainesville, Georgia.

WonderQuest is GTA's Theatre for Young Audiences division and is the only north Georgia organization dedicated to high-quality theatre for children and families.

"The Pirate Queen" is the story of Gráinne Mhaol, the daughter of an Irish chieftain, who "was born wild as the waves and wind, born to be a sea captain — if only she can convince the world of that." This magical Irish adventure is based on the legend of Grace O'Malley, Ireland's "Pirate Queen."

It is a new show from WonderQuest Director Gay H. Hammond, who is celebrating her 30th anniversary as director of GTA's Theatre for Young Audiences division, McClain said.

Other performances include "GTA New Works Festival" running Oct. 20-23 in the Ed Cabell Theatre on UNG's Gainesville Campus at 3820 Mundy Mill Road in Oakwood, Georgia. The GTA New Works Festival, which is free to the public, introduces GTA audiences to the next generation of stories for the American theatre. The event includes staged readings of three new full-length plays and an evening of short plays, all from GTA students and/or alumni. Titles are to be determined.

"Urinetown," with music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann and based on the book and lyrics by Greg Kotis, will be presented Nov. 11-19. This Tony-award winning musical is an irreverent satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. It takes place in a not-so-distant, drought-stricken future, where a malevolent company profits by charging admission for a basic human need. Performances will be in the Hosch Theatre at 429 Academy St. in Gainesville, Georgia. Tickets go on sale Oct. 10.
