The Women of UNG, University of North Georgia President Bonita Jacobs and the UNG Foundation hosted the 13th annual Women's Holiday Scholarship Luncheon on Dec. 1 at the Chattahoochee Country Club in Gainesville, Georgia.
"Opening Doors to Women's Success" was the theme for the event.
There were nine recipients this year, each receiving $1,000, and all coming from the Gainesville Campus. The women were chosen for their academic promise and demonstrating financial need and being a nontraditional students.
"This event is tremendously significant for two reasons: What we're able to raise in scholarship funds and it also presents the importance of women furthering themselves despite an inability to do so financially," Gabrielle Barr Lang, '83, chair of Women of UNG, said.
Barbara DeMarco Williams, '73, a former member of the UNG Foundation Board of Trustees, served as the keynote speaker.
"It has been an honor to speak at this event today and address women of all age groups by showcasing the university and the scholarship recipients," DeMarco Williams said.
The event was created in 2005 by former Gainesville State College President Martha T. Nesbitt before the consolidation forming UNG.
Women of UNG is a shared interest group of the UNG Alumni Association dedicated to promoting the role of women as confident leaders and active participants in UNG. Each year, the group sponsors and supports social, educational, and professional activities to create opportunities for the women of UNG. Through these ongoing activities, the group recognizes the achievements of female UNG students and graduates while also helping women connect, network, and build professional relationships.
